Animated Horror Films?

Are there any animated horror films? I was thinking about how most recent horror movies aren't that original and these days it seems the more torture human charchters are subjected to in horror films the higher they gross.

So thinking about that I wondered what's the next level to take horror films and it seemed to me that an animated horror film would be interesting.

Japan has a good amount of those. Vampire Hunter D, Blood: The Last Vampire and Lupin: The Castle of Cagliostro all come to mind, although the latter is more of an adventure with some spooky scenes.

radicaldeth 01-31-07 05:28 PM

Well, if you mentioning those then the anime series Requiem from the Darkness would fit the bill. Also the movies Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. But really those are more action adventure than real horror. But I was sort meh on those 2 though.

I liked the movie Petite Cossette, but that's more atmosphere and spookiness than horror. Some of the others things I like are Nightwalker, Trinity Blood, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Descendants of Darkness, etc. Vampire related but hardly horror, if that makes sense. I just love vampy stuff. ^^

Then you might as well throw the Hellsing series in there too. Having no knowledge of the manga, helps make that show more watchable. XD Haven't seen Hellsing Ultimate yet, but that's worth a shot too. I also haven't seen Elfen Lied but that gets a lots of praise for the shock and horror factor. Same with Gantz.

BTW, this site has rundowns of several anime series and movies if you wanna see what some of these shows are about. By no means a complete list.

Of course there are several hentai titles that are more horror orented than most anime 'horror' titles. ^^ You, know demon possesesion, torture, tentacle, lotta sex, rape, etc. Only one of those types I've see was Oni Tensei and the sex was...meh. Now if there was only explicit sex in Devil Lady. THAT woulda made one heck of a hentai series. ^^

brainee 01-31-07 05:28 PM

Japan has the most that I can think of. The aforementioned Vampire Hunter D, Blood ... as well as Devil Man, Demon City Shinjuku, Wicked City. You've got the sick hentai tentacle rape of Urotsukidoji and La Blue Girl. Not to be overlooked are movies of Satoshi Kon. Perfect Blue is a great Argento/Hitchcock-like horror/thriller, that's very unlike the other movies listed. Paranoia Agent has some horror elements, and his newest Paprika is supposed to be somewhat horror as well. There are loads more anime-horror, especially if you widen your definition of horror to include more action/sci-fi/fantasy oriented movies.

Non-Asian animated horror? Well, there's Heavy Metal, in parts. They made a Lady Death movie, but I haven't seen it. There's a newer Zombie-horror animation called City of Rott. There's the HBO Spawn series. Some of the animation of Jan Svankmajer could be considered horror (like the Poe adaptations and Alice). I'm sure there's more.

Bugg 01-31-07 05:33 PM

I always thought the first few vampire books by Anne Rice would make for a great animated HBO type series.

Giles 02-01-07 09:13 AM

I'm surprised no one has done a movie like 'A Scanner Darkly' where performances could be rotoscoped and effects added with traditional cel animation.

RichC2 02-01-07 09:16 AM

Monster House was my favorite animated movie of '06 and fits into the category, tho is a little more family friendly.

Perfect Blue also comes to mind.

quite a few animes manage to have a horror-esque atomsphere without actually being horror (Akira, Ninja Scroll, etc; )

sundog 02-01-07 09:59 AM

Jan Svankmajer

Cameron 02-01-07 11:01 AM

curse of the were-rabbit.

mad monster party

Zodiac_Speaking 02-01-07 02:24 PM

There's not too many. Sure anime, stop motion, and CGI, but true blue cel animation? not hardly.

There's hope though if Zombie's "The Haunted World of el Superbeasto" is a success.

Dude.. after seeing the Hellsing series.. I got attached with it..

the Ultimate one is pretty much sums up to AWESOME!

filmerp 02-02-07 12:52 AM

I'd put Heavy Metal into that category. Always a great viewing at 2am!

Don't forget Doomed Megalopolis.

I am new to the whole Anime thing. I figured I would give it a shot before I bashed it. Elfen Lied sparked my interest in the genre so I netflixed it. I haven't watched it but pretty excited to see it. Are there any other movies like this that are the more shock, gore movies with a bit of sex?

RichC2 02-26-07 06:41 PM

Though kind of generic, I always found Kite to be interesting - nice take on the hitman genre with some good gore and (the DC at least) has a good deal of sex (some is plot relavent, others.. not so much).

But the first thing to spring to mind was Urotsukidoji, but that's flat out hentai.

Perfect Blue (movie) had a reasonable mix, and one of the most brutal death scenes put to film.

Ninja Scroll is totally and completely up your alley as well, and I actually like that one. ( I'm a bigger fan of the more out-there imaginative stuff, like Spirited Away, Paprika, etc; )

orderandlaw 02-26-07 07:05 PM

Twilight of the Dark master. Another anime.

I personally thought it sucked, but animation wise it's top notch.

I am checking out Ninja Scroll, looks like it is a movie and a series. Which one do I want?

Mondo Kane 02-26-07 09:54 PM

HBO's Spawn count?

DeputyDave 02-27-07 01:54 AM

Regarding "Helsing", whicj version do I watch first? Or does "Ultimate" replace the original?

radicaldeth 02-27-07 09:45 AM

Hellsing Ultimate is the re-make, Unfortunately it' s not all out yet, the oavs are still beng made in Japan. Now the Hellsing series is the original and off-tanget, mainly the ending doesn't follow the manga which may not bother if you don't know the difference. ^^

As for Ninja Scroll, it's prolly the movie.

Not quiet a recomendation for horror here, but if you're trying anime then take a look at these dvds. My husband liked these series and he's not an anime fan, more of he'll watch if he's interested. Hates mechas too.

Requiem from Darkness - 4 dvd series
Desert Punk - 6 dvd, liked it until the end, which he wasn't crazy about.
Bastard 1 dvd oav - sort of a slightly smutty '80s Sat morning cartoon
Memories 1 dvd - 3 self contained stories, think of what you'd read in Heavy Metal
Speedgrapher 6 dvd series - not very deep at all but entertaining
Gungrave - 7 dvd series, doesn't end as strong as the beginning but he liked it anyway
Trigun - first thing he saw and still his favorite, series can be uneven ^^
Outlaw Star - 6 dvds straight up sci-fi series, he liked it for what it was
Heat Guy J - think cop show with a cyborg and it's same animation studio that's making Hellsing Ultimate

There's are others like Last Exile, Cromartie High School, Fantastic Children, Metropolis, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Gunslinger Girls, Millenium Actress; but some of those can be YMMV.

Like Berserk. It ends at very bad place and continues in the manga. He liked the books more than the series and that's the only manga he'll read and keep up with.

DVDsAreMyLIFE 02-27-07 09:50 AM

Thanks for the information, I might check out a couple of these. I didn't know they made a Count of Monte Cristo that might be interesting.

radicaldeth 02-27-07 10:22 AM

Most of these are action, sci fi. Not heavy on gore and sexual content. Requiem from Darkness and Speed Grapher sort of fill that quota. Desert Punk and Bastard are more fanservice and humor.

Gankutsuou has very distinct look to it, which takes some getting used. The story is more from Albert point of view, not the Count's. Doesn't end the same way as the book. Metropolis and Fantastic Children have very retro character designs which didn't throw him at all. These 2 just don't look like current anime styles.

My husband was entertained by these shows and didn't go 'You're watching that again?' . He did that with Revolutionary Girl Utena and various others. ^^ We didn't like Neon Genesis Evangelion either. Not saying it's terrible, but I can think of better things to do. We have this joke that Eva is the Wacky Deli parts from Rocko's Modern Life.

DVDsAreMyLIFE 02-27-07 10:25 AM

I would definitely like to expand my horizons out of the anime horror-gore fests but I thought I would start with those since I secretly enjoy shock movies. Although the girlfriend is not to fond of them so I have to watch them when she isn't around.

radicaldeth 02-27-07 10:58 AM

Ya, Elfen Lied and Gantz are prolly what you're looking for. I haven seen either of 'em yet but people go on about the violence and gore. Gantz had more sex tho.

Should I inflict this on you or not? It' s Apocalypse Zero. A friend told me about this and I wisely stay away. It's pure crap but here's a review.

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/126.php

At least the spider crotch woman in Wicked City was plot relevant. XD Wicked City is a derivative little show and very old school, but it's got sex, occultish things and violence without being a flat out horror hentai.

Ha, sounds pretty interesting, although Netflix doesn't carry it so I guess I won't be able to view this one. I added Gantz, but holy shit its a 10 disc set.
