I haven't heard anything here, but I would think it's stupid to tie Raimi to a production unless he was the only thing that kept Tobey in the mix.

Holy shit.
Wasn't expecting this.
I'll admit, I can't remember too many movies that disappointed me more in the theatres than Spiderman 3. But I have actually really come around to that movie and I find it surprisingly watchable. I dunno, I guess now... I like Spidey 3 despite it's (numerous) flaws.
It's a shame if Raimi isn't doing at least one more of these, but he has already proven he hasn't lost anything... Drag Me to Hell was one of his finest flicks to date. There's no doubt I am anticipating his next feature. And I respect his decision to "quit" if all the news we have heard is accurate.
I am, however, not super excited about the reboot of Spiderman (my favorite traditional comic book hero). I'll be interested to see what news pours fourth...

A reboot sounds good to me. I have a feeling that Spider-Man 4 would've continued to mirror the Superman franchise and end up as The Quest for Peace, shudder...

Does Sony really think a reboot is the smart way to go? It's been less than 8 years since this film series started. I hope whatever reboot they come up with fails.

Why reboot this franchise? Are you saying everyone will walk if Raimi leaves? Don't they have contracts already signed? I almost hope they do reboot it, and it fails, if only to prove to studios that rebooting a franchise the moment it hits a stumbling block is a terrible idea.

Columbia and Raimi put on a unified front Monday when making the announcement they were parting.
"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the boxoffice, and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise.
"Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal said in a statement.
Said Raimi: "Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

I've got the perfect solution... so the Vulture, upset because future Spidey allows his homeworld of Vulturan to explode ends up sucked into a black hole and gets sent back in time where he uses the opportunity to try and kill a younger Peter Parker. It could work.

I say, let the franchise die.
Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker has already had a character arc that's come full circle.
Any movies after this will be an afterthought.
They've already shot their load.

IMHO, Sony is fucking themselves with this decision. Sure, people will come out to see the Spiderman movies because of the previous 3, but unless you have some great direction and some well known names, the movies won't make nearly as much as the 1st three did.

How about that dude who played Jodie Foster's son in Panic Room? He should be old enough to play a teenager now, and could probably use the career boost.

I think the series should just stand. With Sony wanting to fuck up Spidey 4 like they did Spidey 3, a reboot won't help. Besides that's way too early to start a brand new franchise.

After his career comeback with Sherlock Holmes, I think Robert Downey Jr. would do really well in a comic book movie. What better than Spider-Man?
