The obvious addition:

2006 Andy & Larry Wachowski, V For Vendetta
2005 Paul Haggis, Crash
2004 Paul Haggis, Million Dollar Baby

Motherfuckin' Paul Haggis... Sigh.

It's a piss take. You don't actually think they give out an award for manipulative screenwriting as well, do you?

V for Vendetta wasn't manipulative at all, I'm sure when the smoke clears, Letters from Iwo Jima will win.

Each to their own. V for Vendetta just didn't work at all for me, and the writing was a huge factor in that.

I think we have different opinions of what manipulative means.

More of a piss, actually.

Because Paul Haggis is the first guy to write broadly? Gimme a break...

The "Lord of the Rings" films are the most "manipulative" pictures of the last ten years, so I vote Peter Jackson and co.

There's some bad movies that I would call "manipulative". We Were Soldiers and Pay it Forward are good examples.

But I WATCH MOVIES to be manipulated! I'm not gonna make a list. But I would say that at least 50 of my 100 favorite movies are largely manipulative. Nothin' to be ashamed about.

How exactly is V for Vendetta manipulative? The story couldn't be much more straightforward

Will someone explain what is meant by manipulative?

It seems to me as if this thread is using manipulative to mean obvious.

Manipulative usually means writing a story that is designed to push every emotional button to get a guaranteed reaction. You're so emotionally drained by the film, that by the time it's over you might think it was a good movie, even though it probably wasn't. Patch Adams immediately comes to mind.

The Pursuit of Happyness should be a candidate for 2006.
