Imitation of Life appreciation thread

Just watched both versions(1934 & 1959) and forgot how great they were. '34 version is OK, but the '59 remake is one of the best movies I've ever seen and is highly overlooked/underrated. Probably has the most tear-jerkish scenes of any film I've seen. I dare you to say you can watch this movie all the way through with dry eyes. If you think Grave of the Fireflies is sad, it looks like The Wizard of Oz next to this film. Definitely in my top 10 favs. Trivia: Did you know that the girl of played Sara Jane, Susan Kohner is actually Mexican? Also, Lena Horne was supposed to play Sara Jane but but because of creative differences with the director, walked off set. |
< Loves the '59 version

I just saw this recently here in San Diego on the big screen. Mahalia Jackson's singing at the end just crushes me everytime. Great movie.

According to imdb.com her Father, Paul Kohner.... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0463434/bio According to film historian Scott MacQueen, Kohner was engaged in the late 1920s to Mary Philbin, star of Phantom of the Opera and The Man Who Laughs. Mary broke off the engagement at the request of her parents, as she was Irish Catholic and Kohner was a Czech Jew. Susan Kohner  http://s09.picshome.com/48a/kohner.jpg I didn't know Juanita Moore was still alive but here she is with Susan. This pic is apparently a recent one. http://s09.picshome.com/48a/juanitam...san-kohner.jpg |
This movie is such a heartbreaker. I have to watch it everytime it airs.

I didn't realize that her mother was Lupita Tovar. Tovar starred in the Spanish version of Dracula and coincidently her photo adorns my office.
