The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (D: Dominik) S: Pitt, Affleck

This sounds like a cool western.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=8071

Brad Pitt is going to play gunslinger Jesse James in a period Western that will be directed by Chopper helmer Andrew Dominik and produced by Pitt's Plan B Films. The project is based on the Robert Hansen novel "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

In the book, Hansen re-creates the real West with his imaginative telling of the life of the most famous outlaw of them all, Jesse James, and of his death at the hands of the upstart Robert Ford.

James, a charismatic, superstitious, and moody man, holds sway over a ragged gang who fear his temper and quick shooting. Robert Ford, a young gang member torn between worshipping Jesse and taking his place, guns him down in cold blood and lives out his days tormented by the killing.

The book was optioned last year as a co-production between Scott Free partners Ridley and Tony Scott, and Plan B, the Warner Bros.-based company that was run by Pitt, Brad Grey and Jennifer Aniston.

The studio hasn't yet chosen an actor for the Ford role.

I'm not expecting The Wild Bunch. But please at least give us Young Guns. I couldn't stomach another American Outlaw.

Pitt could pull off doing a Western quite well, IMO. Glad to hear it.

Should be good, maybe it will have the sorta environment and feeling of HBO's Deadwood. Young Guns was good but kinda cheesy with that 80s music in it.

As long as Jesse is gritty and mean and not Brad Pitt in a cowboy outfit it should be pretty good.

For me, Jesse James on celluloid begins and ends with Walter Hill's The Long Riders.

Agreed. The genre was laid to rest too early and for too long. Now that some of these films are more historical and based on more fact than glamour they are alot more compelling to watch.

Affleck Joins Pitt in Jesse James
Source: Variety August 8, 2005

Casey Affleck will play the infamous Robert Ford in Warner Bros.' adaptation of Robert Hansen novel "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," reports Variety.

The film will be directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper) and starts shooting in two weeks. Brad Pitt's Plan B and Ridley and Tony Scot's Scott Free produce.

Pitt plays famed gunslinger James. Ford is a youth who joined the James gang and went from idolizing to resenting the man known as the fastest gun in the West. He figured on making his rep by gunning down James but shot his mentor in the back, stamping himself the most famous coward around.

Affleck, the younger brother of his Good Will Hunting co-star Ben Affleck, will next be seen in DreamWorks Pictures' The Last Kiss.

For those who haven't seen it yet, make sure you watch Chopper. It has a brilliant performance by Eric Bana. I've been waiting years for Dominick to make another film and I doubt he'll fail to make a good one.

Casey Affleck? I wonder if he'll call James a "tracer" before shooting him.

Agreed - 100% !

Chopper is a winner all the way, and Dominick adds an exciting element to this project.

I think this could be really interesting if it's done correctly. It sounds pretty cool with a young guy idolizing Pitt and then eventually seeing the err of his ways and kills him. Oh my I just described Fight Club.
