Lucas: Filming `Indiana Jones 4' in 2007
Friday December 29 5:10 PM ET

George Lucas said Friday that filming of the long-awaited "Indiana Jones" movie will begin next year.

Harrison Ford, who appeared in the three earlier flicks, the last one coming in 1989, is set to star again.

Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

"It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be the best one yet," the 62-year-old filmmaker said during a break from preparing for his duties as grand marshal of Monday's Rose Parade.

Exact film locations have not been decided yet, but Lucas said part of the movie will be shot in Los Angeles.

The fourth chapter of the "Indiana Jones" saga, which will hit theaters in May 2008, has been in development for over a decade with several screenwriters taking a crack at the script, but it only recently gained momentum.

Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest action flick will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."

"I think it's going to be really cool," Lucas said.

At the inaugural Rome Film Festival in October, the 64-year-old Ford said he was excited to team up with Lucas and Spielberg again for the fourth "Indiana Jones" installment. Ford said he was "fit to continue" to play the title role despite his age.

Ford played Indiana Jones in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom" and 1989's "The Last Crusade."

Lucas praised Ford for breathing life into his character.

"Mostly it's the charm of Harrison that makes it work," he said.

If this does open...I will be there on opening day. I really hope they bring back Karen Allen. They were great together.

DieselsDen 12-29-06 06:14 PM

So long as it doesn't become a tired re-hash like LAST CRUSADE, then I, too, look forward to seeing it. (I know...that's really big of me.)

calhoun07 12-29-06 07:00 PM

And the Last Crusade was a re-hash how? I thought the movie was very good on it's own.

argh923 12-29-06 07:07 PM

I thought it was the best of the three, personally.

Mercury&Solace 12-29-06 07:09 PM

I don't think any Indy movie can top Raiders, but we will see. -pray- -pray-

JumpCutz 12-29-06 07:10 PM

Wow and Lucas says " It's going to be fantastic. This will be the best one yet".

Yeah right.

Terrell 12-29-06 07:44 PM

Yeah right.
What do you expect him to say? It sucks and everyone is going to hate it. Of course he's going to say it'll be great, or why would he even bother. He's doing what ever good producer should do, cheer his and his director's film on.

I wouldn't expect it to top it. Nay, shall I say it'll be near impossible to top it.

I just expect to have a fun time at the theater. Popcorn, soda and a seat middle center. I'm so there.

Duh, really?

breadlymoore 12-29-06 08:01 PM

Keep expectation away. Just enjoy the new movie!

That's about the most anyone should expect. If it turns out great, the better it will be for all of us. But it's damn near impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice, especially years after the fact. The prequels taught us that, and expectations for those were down right absurd.

OldBoy 12-29-06 10:35 PM

if they can do it like Sly did "Rocky Balboa" then i think it will be all good.

Goldberg74 12-29-06 11:47 PM

Great... I feel like we're going to get "National Jones" or "The Indy Code" with all the mystery and hush-hush.

But who am I kidding... I'll be there!!!!!!!!

Cameron 12-30-06 12:22 AM

nope. producing. Spielberg is at the helm

No time for CGI love, Dr Jones!

D'oh, we're screwed...

I kid, I kid. I'll definitely see it, hoping they pull it off...

Kudama 12-30-06 11:07 AM

How cool would it be if they could swing the appropriate rights and have Indy Unlimited?

Where he has to accomplish the mission by teaming up with hard hitters like Doc Savage (and team), The Green Hornet (and Kato), The Shadow (and team) and Tarzan (and Cheetah).

Yes. I know that will not happen. But it would rock if (for what I perceive will be the coda) for him to team up with some of the characters that inspired the first movie.

Nest pa?

Filmmaker 12-30-06 01:26 PM

I can't believe there is more worry about Lucas's input as producer than relief and faith with Spielberg directing. I will bet a year's pay that, with Spielberg making the critical creative decisions, this will not, cannot, be another PHANTOM MENACE...

As long as Spielberg sticks with traditional stunts and as little CGI as possible, I think the movie will turn out fine. Unlike Lucas who no longer appears capable of writing or directing a scene if his life depended on it, Spielberg is still a very talented filmmaker.

The big question is will Connery come out of retirement to be in this?

Terrell 12-30-06 02:12 PM

 Just like "Pavlov's dog" isn't it. Mention Lucas and the haters come out. You can bet these same Lucas haters will lambast him if the film sucks, even though Spielberg is in complete charge of this.

Red Dog 12-30-06 02:16 PM

Cool.
