LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ennio Morricone, the prolific film composer who created music for more than 300 films, such as the memorable coyote-howl theme from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," is finally getting an Oscar.

Morricone, who has been nominated for five Academy Awards but never won, will receive an honorary Oscar at the Feb. 25 awards.

"I certainly did not expect anything of the sort, by now with great tranquillity and peace of mind I had given up on this," he told Italy's Sky TG24 TV. "This is a great, very important recognition, which I deem of great value."

Morricone had original score nominations for "Days of Heaven," "The Mission," "The Untouchables," "Bugsy" and "Malena."

In announcing the award Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences cited the Italian composer's "magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music."

Morricone, 78, composed for many of director Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns as well as a range of other genres, including "Cinema Paradiso," "La Cage Aux Folles" and "Bulworth."

This is awesome...
Prob one of the best composers ever if not the best finally gets recognized by the Academy...
How cool is some of his music. espescially Once Upon A time in the West, Good,The Bad & the Ugly etc...
Love his music even all his later stuff like Lolita and Bulworth...Anyone know if he is doing any more upcoming scores or is he retired?

Morricone still works as long as he gets paid.

I heard Tarantino tried to get him to do one song for Kill Bill, but Morricone said give me a million dollars and I'll do the whole score. Of course QT only wanted one song so he rejected the deal. I think that's pretty much how he works now, million bucks per film.

Wonder if Lars said the same thing (Remember that early rumor about Lars Ulrich working on the score too?)

Yet, Morricone's music still ended up being used in Kill Bill and it was such a blast to hear young'uns (And oldbies alike) ask "What was the name of that song that appeared in" such & such scene.

A new generation introduced to the maestro.

It wasn't a matter of money; the amount of money Morricone works for varies from project to project. He did the Russian film 72 Metra for a fraction of what any other composer of his stature would have, while I believe NHK drove a dumptruck full of money up to his house for Musashi. :) The sticking point was that Tarantino asked Morricone to fly to the US to record one cue(and not with his preferred musicians in Rome). Morricone said he was flattered, but could not make such an allowance in his schedule - and cancel concert dates - for what would be a few minutes of film music, and declined. (This was documented in the London Daily Telegraph back in '03 - yes, I'm such a geek I collect Morricone articles and interviews.) Of course, Tarantino ended up liscensing several cues from six different pre-existing Morricone scores.
As for the honorary Oscar, it's a nice capper to his first US concert appearance and film retrospective that occur in NY earlier in Feb. But I don't think justice will be truly served until the Academy admits they were collectively high when they gave the award to 'Round Midnight over The Mission.

Outstanding! Morricone's my favorite composer, and I have nearly 200 soundtracks of his, so this is the best news I've heard today. Wonder who will be presenting the award...Clint Eastwood, perhaps?

Does it matter? Everyone knows that Honorary Oscar is only given as an obligatory thing because they never awarded the person when they actually deserved it...Cary Grant...Robert Altman.

An Honorary Oscar is even more special. It singles out and recognizes the individual for his body of work. They don't do that for everybody. I'm sure Three 6 Mafia or Marissa Tomei are not going to get a life achievement Oscar. It's not as dependent on the fickle tastes of the voters in a given year.

Anyone seen Operation Double 007, a 60s spy knockoff with Connery's brother Neil? It was on mst3k, and i especially liked the music, sure enough it was scored by him.

I love Morricone's work. Easily the most versatile and experimental film composer still alive. I can't stop finding great music that he wrote, there's so much out there.

You ain't kidding. A few years ago I stumbled onto something he composed called "(L'incontro) or "The Encounter" from a slight-obscure film called The Master and Margaret. And...Man, this is such an unbelievable romantic composition.
You put this song in the mix of Bach,Mozart (Or Whoever) and chances are whoever's listening to this tune would think that it was made centuries ago. Morricone's that slick.
