Philippe Noiret (1930 - 2006)

This monument of French cinema died of cancer yesterday at the age of 76. Noiret, an extremely gifted actor who could switch from comedy to drama with extreme ease, appeared in over 140 films during his long carreer. The first film I remember seeing Noiret in was "Alexandre le Bienheureux" (1968). His friendship and association with filmmaker Betrand Tavernier gave us a number of great films such as: "L'Horloger de St-Paul", "Que la Fête Commence", "Le Juge et L'Assassin", and "Coup de Torchon". And who can forget his portrayal of Alfredo in Giuseppe Tornatore's "Nuevo Cinema Paradiso". He will be missed.

I am sorry to hear it. Cinema Paradiso is one of my favourites.
