10. GOOD YEAR, A 20TH CENTURY FOX 2,066 1,238,000 599 n/a 1,238,000

Edit: Yesterday was a holiday in the US, which explains the higher than expected numbers for the top 3 movies. Not sure what the overall weekend gross will turn out to be.

Both A Good Year and The Return tanked.

Wow, that's quite a jump in theaters for Borat.

Ouch for A Good Year, but I'm not surprised. I honestly saw no promotion for it AT ALL, aside from the mentions it received in Crowe's 60 Minutes interview. Hell, I hadn't even seen a trailer for it at any movie I've seen, and I see a decent number of films. I think Fox blew their whole promotion budget on Borat.

The thing about Borat is most of it's promotion has been cheap due to Cohen's apperances on talk shows and news features. I honestly haven't seen many ads for it.

I've seen a few for A Good Year, but it honestly strikes me as a movie that would play better on video.

I saw A Good Year trailers several times in the past few weeks, but it didn't look that great. Rich city guy inherits a vineyard, where he learns how to stop and smell the roses. Meh.

$29 Million for Borat. Santa Clause 3 and Flushed Away hung in there pretty well, and a decent opening for Stranger than Fiction. Flags of Our Fathers is out of the Top 10, Departed and Prestige are still hanging around.

Good numbers for The Departed. Doesn't look like Borat will hit $100 mil... close though. Next week Casino Royale and Happy Feet should pull in big numbers.

I think it's got a very good shot. It only needs another $33 mil. Factor in another $10 mil or so throughout the weekdays, and even if there's a larger than average 60% drop next weekend, that's still another $12 mil or so for next weekend. Then it just needs $11 mil for the rest of its run.

It will definitely hit $100 mill in the U.S.

Called that the first weekend, seemed pretty obvious it was a huge hit then.

Even if Borat drops off 50% next week, it'll still hit $100 Million easy.

Yeah considering it made nearly 10% more than it did last weekend, and it's had a solid multiplier both weekends (increase from Friday to Saturday, most movies that drop 55% or more drop from Friday to Saturday) I'd say it has a fantastic chance of busting through the $100m mark.

Yeah, Bond will get some big numbers next week, but I don't see Borat having a problem getting that last $30 mil over it's run.

What will we say if Borat stays #1 next week and beats Bond?

It would mean that Borat has either increased or stayed level for a second weekend, or the Bond series has sunk pretty far. All of the Brosnan Bond movies have done over $25 Million for their first weekend, and Die Another Day did $47 Million.

I don't think Borat is beating Bond...that's pushing it (in Borat's 3rd week).

That being said, might be close.

Well, if Bond brings in around $18 million, then we might have a dogfight on our hands: Bonds vs. Borat.

Bond has no direct competition next weekend. I think it will have between $30 mil - $40 mil opening weekend. This is a new Bond, so it may open on the softer side, but I'm excited to see it.

If Casino Royale doesn't open to at least 40 million, I'm going to be pretty shocked. I love Borat, but Bond will be #1 for sure... but I don't think Borat will drop that much % wise, it has no real comedy competition...

It's incredible that Flushed Away AND Santa Clause 3 both lost only about 10% from last weekend's business.

Here's something interesting about Borat:

Originally Posted by Box Office Mojo
Fox reported that Borat's 837 holdover theaters were down about 30 percent, which means they accounted for $18.5 million of the movie's $29 million weekend and averaged $22,000 per site. The 1,729 additional theaters contributed $10.5 million, averaging $6,000 per site. In other words, the original theaters on average saw more than three and a half times the business of the new theaters.
I see this movie going to $100MM easy.

Oh, and harsh times for Harsh Times, eh?
