What are some good war movies?
I've been getting into war movies lately. Here are the ones I've seen so far:
I have the following checked out from the library:
And the following on request:
I've had Band of Brothers recommended. Other than those, what are other recommendations? Additionally, I've seen the following military-related movie(s):
|
Apocalypse Now
Tigerland Glory Platoon |
If you're looking for movies about WWI, these are all highly recommended:
* All Quiet on the Western Front * Paths of Glory * A Farewell to Arms (1932 version) * The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp * Sergeant York (you'll need a VCR to view this though) There's also Blackadder Goes Forth, which is part of the BBC comedy show Blackadder. The whole series is fantastic, but Forth deals with WWI specifically. I'll also mention the Howard Hughes-directed Hell's Angels, which is actually fairly crappy and overlong, but the aerial battle sequences are worth seeing at least once. Edit: there's also Grand Illusion. It's not so much about WWI than it is a story of friendship and society set against the backdrop of the war. Personally, I could never get into it, but it is generally considered one of the greatest movies ever made. |

Paths of Glory
The Killing Fields The Battle of Algiers Apocalypse Now The Deer Hunter Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War Das Boot (uncut) Lawrence of Arabia Patton Throne of Blood Ran Henry V (Branagh) Downfall All Quiet on the Western Front |
any reason why no one mentioned Band of Brothers? This is one of the greates war series ever

We Were Soldiers
Gettysburg Gods & Generals |
forgot the names but there was one about Navajo code talkers with Nick Cage and another one by terence malick some years back that i fell asleep in
The Longest Day - John Wayne In the Army Now Jarheads Spartacus Troy Alexander Hannibal - coming out next year i think From Here to Eternity Waterloo The Day After Red Storm Rising Crimson Tide Broken Arrow The Patriot |
Joint Security Area - A Korean film in a similar vein to A Few Good Men, although I find it much more tragic and involving. I can look past the (limited) English in the film being phoenetically spoken, but some can't.
Dark Blue World - A Czech film about pilots who flee to England and join the RAF after Germany invades Czechoslovakia. Wonderful film, insultingly bad final scene. The SE is $6 at Deep Discount DVD and well worth it. Snow Falling On Cedars - A courtroom drama (about a non-military incident) that has some wonderful WWII sequences involving both the war and the Japanese internment camps. As far as submarine films go, I second the Das Boot recommendation. The Hunt For Red October is enjoyable. U-571 is vapid but fun, especially with a good surround sound system and subwoofer. All of them kick K-19's ass. |
Some good ones that haven't mentioned yet...
Bat21 (Nam) Bravo Two Zero (GW1) Dam Busters (WW2) Desert Rats (WW2) Devil's Brigade (WW2) Eagle Has Landed (WW2) Great Raid (WW2) Hell in the Pacific (WW2) Run Silent Run Deep (WW2) Three Kings (GW1) To End All Wars (WW2) - Prison movie based on a real story Tuskegee Airmen (WW2) |
What constitutes a "war" movie? For my money, The Two Towers is an excellent war movie (the battle at Helms Deep is fantastic).
Along the same lines, I wouldn't consider A Few Good Men a "war" movie. |
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
A Bridge Too Far (1977) No Man's Land (2001) |
the battle of the bulge
where eagles dare the one where medieval russians defeat the germans on the frozen lake and the germans throw babies into a bonfire |
Defintely watch Das Boot (subtitled version, uncut).
And a few more which cover all sorts of wars: Tora! Tora! Tora! The Longest Day Starship Troopers the new Battlestar Galatica pilot (and subsequent series) Braveheart The Patriot By the way, I reread the original post and there isn't a question. Gatordeb, are you looking for our favorite war movies, or just random lists of movies about wars? |

Gatordeb, are you looking for our favorite war movies, or just random lists of movies about wars? I guess war movie = movie with a war in it. And that's right, A Few Good Men wouldn't be a war movie, so I'd move that one to military-related. I like any movie that depicts military life, not just war, so I'd also be looking for recommendations for those (i.e. Codebreakers). |
Surprised that Peter Weir's Gallipoli hasn't been mentioned yet. It's a fantastic film that deals with Australia's entrance into World War I. Great final scene too.
