Variety and Hollywood Reporter both gave it positive reviews, Variety's first paragraph made me chuckle:

He is like 7ft tall in the movie. Saw it last night at the myspace screening in IMAX - the movie was incredible. It basically kicks your ass for 120 minutes and had so many moments where I couldn't help but think "This is SO FUCKING COOL". Every SHOT of the film could be a work of art. Everything is planned out and shown with such detail and precision, even though the plot is pulpy, you know this movie is something more. I loved the entire look of the film, down to how the blood acts in the frame (you have to see this...).
Easily the movie of the year so far and if this thing doesn't get a chance at the art direction and cinematography oscars, it's just because it's coming out too soon for that. *(although, in IMAX, there was still a lot of noticable grain in a few scenes, but that didn't make the images any less breathtaking). The movie isn't perfect, and I have a few nitpicks, but I won't get into those until it officially opens and everyone here gets a chance to see it, and I get a repeat viewing (or 2 or 3). 2 weeks from now, go see 300.

Nice! Anybody see how the messanger was talking like a "god" until King Leonidas put that sword up against his neck; I bet the same thing happens to Xerxes.

I saw this at the Berlin Film Festival. The film is such a strange potpurri - post 9/11 Bushisms going along with unmistakably homoerotic imagery. Some scenes between Xerxes and Leonidas made some people so ucomfortable they were laughing. Sure, the acting is atrocious, the dialogue laughable and some scenes just plain unintentionally hilarious. But the film is one of the most fun I've been to in ages. And the eye candy is impressive (and I mean that in more ways than one). I won't spoil it, but one scene with the queen really brought the house down.
Haha, I didn't realise I keep referring the big, hugely ornamented and nearly naked "ruler of the world" as Ramses instead of Xerxes!

Another good review (10/10):
http://www.moviesonline.ca/movie_rev...il.php?id=4354
"A story of fighting. A lot of fighting. A hell of a lot of fighting, but done so well, and in such a damn good looking movie. It's a movie that makes you excited about movies again. Hell, it reduced me to obscene fan-boy gushing like I lost my virginity or solved the world's economic crises, full of hyperbole and nonsensical ramblings. That's what this movie does!!! 300 is one hell of a film."

I think I'm gonna love "300"for the simple fact...when Best Buy gave out the "Sin City" bonus DVD prior to it's release I got it, saw it and thought I would like the movie. Having never even heard of "Sin City" or Frank Miller for that matter. That bonus got me to the theater and I LOVE "Sin City". Now, I have the bonus disc for "300"and will watch that over the weekend, but the trailers look amazing and the free ticket helps as well.
But, I have high expectations now because of Best Buy of all places and can't wait to see what this incarnation is all about.

side comment: I am kind of tired of all these 2.35 AR movies DM-R'd for IMAX, with the black bars above and below the screen image. I'm not advocating to crop them (Attack of the Clones looked terrible cropped), but actually for filmmakers and studios to release more films that have an aspect ratio of 1.85 or less, and really take advantage of IMAX's screen's height. Two recent films I felt really took advantage of this were The Ant Bully and Robots in 2005... oh well.. rant over.

Saw it on Monday night and it was everything everyone is saying it is - thrilling, visceral, violent. I plan to pay to see it again, as Monday's screening was free, and I'm one hell of a tightwad.
The best film of 2007? Well, I probably wouldn't go that far. But it is the film I've enjoyed the most thusfar.

Giles,
I understand your issue with a 2.35 movie on IMAX, but I don't really agree. A movie like 300 couldn't fit everything into a 1.85 frame IMO...it has a scope and depth that the flat aspect ratio just couldn't capture. When I see an IMAX film that is 2.35, the black bars don't bother me at all and the increased resolution and size make it worth the extra cash regardless...and IMAX is such a small part of the release scheme for these major flicks I don't think they'd take it into account during production.
I think a film like 300 already looks Massive on IMAX and the print I saw looked so much better than the trailers I've seen in a standard theatre, that anyone near an IMAX screen should seek it out for this one.

I'm not sure how many fans of Lost are reading this thread, but I thought I'd mention that the actor who plays the God-King Xerxes in 300 also plays Paulo on Lost.
