Scorsese: what to check out next for me?
I've been working my way through Martin Scorse's more popular films and I'm really enjoying his work. I own Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs, Aviator, and No Direction Home, and I have seen Mean Streets but do not own it (it doesn't have a Region 4 release). I was just wondering what some other good films of his are that you'd recommend for me to check out next?

Cape Fear (1991)
The King of Comedy (1983) |
After Hours
Last Temptation Last Waltz A documentary I've heard good things about but never seen: Italianamerican |
Who's That Knocking at My Door? (Keep in mind that this was Scorsese's first feature and was made in film school)
Bringing Out the Dead The Color of Money If you have a lot of time to kill, I recommend checking out A Personal Journey Through American Movies and My Voyage to Italy. They're two, four-hour documentaries of Scorsese just talking about old American and Italian films he loves. It's not as boring as it sounds, and it's interesting to hear him talk about his influences. |
I co sign on the above mentioned documentaries. Great set of disc.
I really like After Hours, and Alice doesn't live here anymore. Really shows the range of scorcese. Seems like most of what you have been watching are his Gang/street movies. This is a female empowerment, and dark comedy.... |
Whatever you do, stay away from Bringing Out the Dead. Worst movie of the year material.
Unlike most here I think The Last Temptation of Christ is laughable. Read the brilliant book instead. I didn't see Kundun. Just about anything else is good to great. |
After Hours.
One of my favorite Scorsese films; highly underappreciated. |
Check out Kundun it is quite amazing
and check out Bringing out the Dead, it may not be his best but i really enjoyed it |
everything except Boxcar Bertha.

The King of Comedy is one of his best films. Definitely see this one next.
Then: The Last Temptation of Christ Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore After Hours Bringing Out the Dead |
definately The Last Waltz
Also, I'm a big fan of The Last Temptation of Christ (bigger fan of the book, though) I haven't seen After Hours. Think I'll rent it since it seems to be pretty popular here. |

To understand what it is that makes him tick, watch this - it's fuckin' amazing, AND it'll open your eyes (and heart) to a whole new world of cinema, if you're not already familiar with it.
