Help Me Pick 4 Movie Posters!
 

I am moving into a new home soon, and it has a room that my wife and I are going to devote to our home theater. We plan to get new seating, a popcorn machine, and there is wall-space for about 4 to 5 movie posters.

At this point, I am thinking that I would like posters for films that denote "movie events" for 4 decades; one for the 70s, one for the 80s, the 90s, and the 00s (up to the present, anyway).

I have a couple of ideas already of which movie posters I would like to display, but even so, I would like to get opinions from some folks as what film was a "defining movie event" for a given decade. Said movie does not necessarily have to be the "best" movie for that decade, or even the top grossing film.

It would help to know what genre of movie you like... but I guess it doesn't matter to you.

1) 70's - The Exorcist
2) 80's - The Evil Dead
3) 90's - Naked Lunch
4) 00's - Ginger Snaps

Personally I wouldn't go the "defining movie event" route but would just go with posters of movies that are your personal favorites (be it cool kick-ass artwork or the movie that you love). Trust me, as an owner of approx 20 or so movie posters, since you are the one to look at them everyday, it is best to get ones that you love.

If you must go with the "defining" theme:
70's - A Clockwork Orange, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jaws, or Star Wars
80's - Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Platoon, or Back To The Future
90's - Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Pulp Fiction, or Fight Club
00's - Memento, Team America, Any of the three Lord of The Rings movies, or Requiem For A Dream

Don't know what's available but i'd probably pick The Conversation, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Magnolia, and Eternal Sunshine/Almost Famous(If you count 2000 as 00's).

I personally own a bunch:
Stripes, High Fidelity, Out of Sight, The Limey, Garden State, Eternal Sunshine, Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, Elizabethtown, Rodger Dodger, The Fountain, The Tao of Steve, Lost in Translation, The Rules of Attraction, and a couple others that are eluding me at the moment.

Certainly, I will pick posters of movies I enjoy, be it the movie itself or the artwork of the poster. Also, it must meet the criteria of being a movie I own on DVD.

As said before, I do have some ideas in mind, but I decidedly didn’t want to say up front, as I was simply curious to see what you guys would pick without any criteria given.

I began to think about a) artwork I like, b) movies I enjoy, and c) the most nostalgic movie for a given decade. What I began to realize is that, as it turns out, most often the most nostalgic movie for me was also a big movie event at the time.

These are the posters I was considering, even before I posted here:

70s: Star Wars
80s: Batman (also considering Back to the Future or The Blues Brothers)
90s: Titanic (also considering Apollo 13 or Jurassic Park)
00s: Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship pf the Ring (also considering Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl)

I was curious if you're planning to get original posters or reprints.

70s: Jaws, Star Wars, Godfather I or II, The Exorcist, Rocky
80s: E.T., Raiders of The Lost Ark, Gremlins, Back To The Future, Outsiders, Stand By Me or Predator
90s: Dances With Wolves. Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption,
00s: Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Lord of The Rings, King Kong, Spider Man

Just don't get any American movie posters. They all suck. Get some Polish ones, they are effing awesome.

I second Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, and definitely Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.

70's - The French Connection, The Godfather (only because Jaws and Star Wars have already been mentioned as excellent suggestions)

80's - Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, Stand By Me

90's - Pulp Fiction

00's - to be honest, I haven't seen a really cool movie poster in several years. Maybe a Pixar movie like Monsters' Inc of Finding Nemo? Those are pretty important films (they certainly define the decade of runaway CGI).

Some good '80s picks, but I have to maintain that E.T. was the most defining film of the decade over BATMAN, BACK TO THE FUTURE or THE BLUES BROTHERS; if you insist on one of the latter three, I'd go with BACK TO THE FUTURE.

Is there any need to have the posters match a certain color scheme?

Another thing you've got to consider is the availability of attractive posters to accomodate your films. The posters for the original '89 Batman and Jurassic Park are very limited unless you like symbols against a black background - which both look sharp, imho. :up:

I just moved into a house 2 months ago and the living room became the dedicated theatre w/ new 50" plasma, etc... Walls needed some posters so I ended up w/ Goonies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dark Crystal, NIghtmare Before Xmas, Hellboy (Villians only version) and Empire Strikes Back.

It wasn't really much of an "event", per se, but I've always loved the <i>Out of Sight</i> poster:

To heck with the decade standard. The only 4 you need are:

A L I E N
The Thing (Carpenters)
Star Wars (IV)
Raiders of the lost Ark


And to hell with the wife acceptance factor too!

I see a lot of votes for Pulp Fiction, but just so you guys know, I absolutely despise that film. It held no entertainment value for me whatsoever. Why it is held in such high regard to so many I will never understand.

In terms of color scheme: I was trying to keep the posters somewhat diverse, both in relation to the colors of the posters as well as the film it advertises. I had planned on using black frames; to keep it somewhat neutral, as well as to match some other framed pictures that I plan to hang in the room.

My entertainment center is light-colored oak, and my Mitsubishi is black. The room has large white ceramic tile, though we plan to put a rug down. We have not yet decided on color of seats, curtains, or even the rug. Currently, the room is off-white, though we may paint it; but again, no colors have yet been chosen.

Better than the movie itself, I'll give you that.
