THE THING: prequel

The Thing Prequel coming !

Now this is very nice news. Strike Entertainment ("Dawn of the Dead" remake) are planning a prequel to John Carpenter's "The Thing". According to our colleagues from 'Fangoria' the company is searching for a writer (or writers) to pen the screenplay. In my opinion a prequel to the story is a much better idea then the TV miniseries remake Sci Fi planned some years ago (does anyone know what happened to it?). Not as cool as a sequel, but still nice.

I really love "The Thing" and hope they go with cool animatronic effects and get a good director. I don't want to see cheap CGI stuff, i want slimy, disgusting monsters and great craftsmansship once again. Well, how about John Carpenter and Rob Bottin teaming up again? They managed to make a classic once, they would be able to make another one. And just as a hint, i'm sure Vincent Guastini (interview) also would love to do the SFX. He's one of the biggest "The Thing" fans i know. In case you missed it, you can read my review, and in case you still haven't seen the movie yet, go get the DVD. Now!

Considering the storyline of Carpenter's 'The Thing', I'm wondering how exactly a prequel would work. Would it be connected in any way or would it just be an earlier visit to earth by 'The Thing' kind of rehashing roughly the same events, in a different time and place?
I agree that if they proceed I'd prefer actual physical effects. Bottin's work is of course, legendary.
I have a feeling a lot of CGI would be used in any sort of prequel/sequel.

This doesn't sound like a good idea.

movielib 09-07-06 11:24 PM

Perhaps it would consist of "The Thing's" ship crashing into the ice followed by 100,000 years (or whatever it was, I forget) of its sitting there until it was discovered by the Norwegians. :)

I can certainly see the potential. -ohbfrank-

Please, leave this great classic alone!

Spiderbite 09-07-06 11:35 PM

I always felt that John Carpenter's The Thing seemed more of a sequel than a remake of The Thing From Another Planet. So in my opinion, there was already a prequel. Leave it alone.

TomOpus 09-07-06 11:43 PM

Yeah, leave it alone before they turn it into a CG crapfest.

Like the 50's version, I think Carpenter's version strayed too far (in it's own way) from the source material, John W. Campbell's "Who Goes There". I'd like to see someone go back and do that.

And while we're at it, I'd also like someone to do Bates "Farewell to the Master," the source for Day the Earth Stood Still. Good movie, but a better story.

Well it's a prequel not a remake so technically they are leaving it alone.

I guess this will end all that talk about the Sci Fi Channell remake or sequel. Wonder whatever happened to that talk of doing a new version that stuck real close to the book?

RyoHazuki 09-08-06 01:50 AM

Since the Thing was a remake anyways, you people should be less hurt about a prequel. Although I hear Strike is gonna come to your house and cgi over the effects on your dvd copies.

Watch it be PG-13 too and star some "actors" for the CW.

Seriously, just leave The Thing alone. Go prequelize something else.

Maybe they'll throw us all for a loop and the film will be about the development of the chess game that Kurt Russell plays.

I'm hoping for Busta Rymes or Fitty. :fc:

A prequel is actually a good idea for this series and would be much more interesting than a sequel. Of course, it all depends on who is at the helm.

Maybe the ship that the Thing crashed in wasn't really the Thing's ship? The prequel could follow the story of human-ish aliens on a starship travelling the galaxy, and accidently pick up the Thing hitchhiker, who kills off everyone, except for the last guy, who thinks he can kill the Thing by crashing it into earth.

:up: I'd pay to see that!

The entire movie would be about the two Norwegians chasing that dog and their struggle to stay alive. It's more of a heart warming story about two friends and an evil dog.

When people rewatch 'The Thing' they will feel the sadness when one friend blows up the other friend and other get's shot in the eyeball.

Well if they can get Kristen Bell naked in it, then Im all in...

Digigeek06 09-09-06 10:35 AM

The Thing was and is still one of my top 3 Horror movies of all time and as everyone else know,it still hiolds up very well.

I agree with an earlier post, leave The Thing alone as it would be destroyed by the now today standard crapfest called CGI! The true masters of horror are the great makeup, creature creations and Rob Bottin is one of the best!

lopper 09-09-06 10:57 AM

It's not like they're remaking the movie or anything, so I really don't see how a prequel takes away from the original at all.

I can see a pretty kick ass movie being made based on what little we know about the Things back story. The discovery of the ship, the massacre of the Norwegians, etc.. I don't see why that can't be fleshed out more into a full length film.

Maybe my asshole just isn't puckered tight enough, I don't know.

DeputyDave 09-09-06 11:45 AM

Considering the cliff-hanger ending of John Carpenter's first movie, I would love to see a well made apocalyptic sequel.
