From the teaser to the above trailer, I've liked everything I've seen so far. I have no complaints about the cgi either. It looks perfectly fine to me. I'm really looking forward to checking this out opening night

meh. between it looking like a complete retread of carpenter's version and the CGI effects i'm not sure if i'll be seeing this in the theater. maybe, we'll see. i want it to be good but i just don't think it'll be in the same league as carpenter's.

what would you like for the ending?

Pretty sure it needs to end with a copter taking off in pursuit of a dog...otherwise it's a massive FAIL!!!

If this really is a prequel, why would they just call it The Thing?

That which is bolded. It has to happen.

oh absolutely. that HAS to happen and I'm positive it will.

What they also could do is that we see the two men go off in the chopper chasing the dog 3/4 of the way through the film. Then we could follow a couple of the other chasing another 'thing'. They could be out tracking it for a couple days and then end up at the US Outpost at the end of the flick.

Re: THE THING: prequel

....I dunno about that...I rather prefer the dog being last...thing.

I was hoping this trailer would get me more excited, then I watched it and saw a CGI fuck fest and... yea...

Alright...I know we all know that The Thing is pretty much a perfect film..but...wtf is up w/ all the hate towards CGI? Seems like they're being reasonable w/ it.

Yeah, most of the effects shots look like something Bottin would've done if he'd had the technology, budget and time.

islandclaws 09-20-11 11:35 AM

Re: THE THING: prequel

Bottin had the TALENT; he didn't need CGI because he could do it himself.

The hate for CGI in this instance, for me, at least, is that I've already seen The Thing created with unfuckingbelieveably amazing FX done using PRACTICAL effects. So, it can be done. I guarantee almost none of what we see in this film couldn't have been done with a talented team, but producers want to go the quick & cheap route, as always.

Re: THE THING: prequel

I love what Bottin did in the original, but there's nothing wrong with the FX crew using modern techniques for the prequel, any more than there was anything wrong with Bottin using techniques that would've been impossible in the Hawks film.

I love Carpenter's film, so I was skeptical. But from what I've seen I think it can be pretty good and entertaining. I'll go watch it once it comes out, I'll make sure not to expect a classic like the 1982 movie was.

Except that both the FX used by Bottin and the original film's crew appear tangible. Everything I saw in this trailer was obviously CGI, and that takes me out of a film quicker than anything. I find it especially annoying because they tried to make it sound like Gillis & Woodruff were doing practical FX on most of the designs.

Re: THE THING: prequel

I'll still see this and hope its good. I don't mind CGI, but here is the issue I have with it here: The makers of this movie seems to have the intention to make a companion piece for Carpenters film, and to use CGI so heavily only further separates it further from Bottin's FX.

I would love to see a prequel that would perfectly mesh with Carpenter's watching back to back. I'm seeing problems with the FX meshing now.

I'll still see it with a smile on, though.

I thought I saw a quick teaser on TV the other day and this film is now just called...The Thing.
Nothing about a prequel.

Solid Snake 09-20-11 05:35 PM

Re: THE THING: prequel

..it's always been called The Thing.

JumpCutz 09-20-11 05:39 PM

Re: THE THING: prequel

Oh. I thought perhaps they alluded to the fact that is was a prequel somewhere in the title.

Guess not.

Re: THE THING: prequel

Would've been better if they used the comic title, "The Thing From Another World".

Solid Snake 09-20-11 07:08 PM

Re: THE THING: prequel

I was actually thinking giving it the original's title would be neat as well.

That's the name of the original film and as Snake stated would have been a great title for this one too.

Re: THE THING: prequel

I still find it amusing that people have their opinion of the film ready based on a trailer. Sure a trailer is an introduction to the following film, and it gives you an idea of what it'll be like, but a trailer can also manipulate so many other aspects such as pace, timing, astmosphere and such.

As this will be released a bit later in my country, I'll reserve my judgement till when I see the reviews on this board & rotten tomatoes and the rating on imdb.

The original title would be "Who Goes There?" from the John W. Campbell short story.
