MGM Plans 'Blonde,' 'Blue' Sequels
'WarGames' and 'Species' are also getting new incarnations
September 7 2006

On Wednesday (Sept. 6), MGM announced plans to expand its worldwide television distribution operation and, in the process, revealed plans to move forward on sequels to films ranging from the '80s classic "WarGames" to the underwater treasure hunting saga "Into the Blue."

The obligatory Jessica Alba pic

In a press release, the company announced that the MGM Worldwide Television Distribution Group will handle the international television sales for "Casino Royale," Daniel Craig's first turn as James Bond movie, as well as "Rocky Balboa," Sylvester Stallone's final turn as the titular pugilist.

That part isn't interesting. What is interesting is that the release says that the Group will also launch worldwide sales campaigns for a slate of sequels.

There's "Legally Blonde 3," which MGM describes with the slug "Beauty and brains bring big laughs," but without any mention of the presumably absent Reese Witherspoon.

There's "Cutting Edge 3," billed as "the romantic drama about the quest for victory among professional ice skaters." The 1992 romantic skating comedy got made-for-TV sequel treatment earlier this year on ABC family.

Although 2005's "Into the Blue" made less than $20 million domestically, MGM seems to be giving it another go, calling "Blue 2" a "new and exciting installment based on the action thriller about aspiring treasure hunters." It's difficult to imagine either Jessica Alba or Paul Walker being involved.

While the timetable on those three movies is vague, things appear to be moving forward on "WarGames 2," a follow-up to the 1983 Matthew Broderick vehicle. The release says that shooting will begin in November in Montreal on the "thrilling story of what happens when top officials try to dismantle the famous computer." No attached talent was announced.

In addition, as has already been reported in many circles, MGM is overseeing production on "Species 4," starting in October. Frank Mancuso Jr. will executive produce.

It's unclear on whether or not any of these sequels will be theater-bound or if they'll just take the lucrative path straight to DVD.

I'm only really interested in a WarGames sequel, as I think the time is right for a retelling of this story, since much has happened in the advancement of computers since 1983.

This will probably go straight to DVD since it is was other companies, like WB and Universal are doing. For some reason, these shitty sequels are profitable. It may be because the budget is very low without having the major stars who command the big paychecks.

my friend is all googly for Paul - I don't get it, he is such a Ken Doll - I haven't seen one of film that would qualify him as being an "actor". He's like the male counterpart to Tara Reid.

I guarantee these are ALL straight-to-DVD titles. Studios have learned they can make a lot more money calling something "Road House 2" or "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" even if they have little relation to the theatrical releases upon which they are based.

However, I am looking forward to WAR GAMES 2: JOSHUA BOOGALOO

Normally, I'd shudder at the idea but, hey, it'll likely lead to a Special Edition, remastered DVD release of the original film (which looks like ass on its current DVD), so that ain't bad at all...

Wargames 2 has been in development for many years now. I've read the old script for the sequel, "Wargames 2000" which actually brought the Ally Sheedy/Mathew Broderick characters back...but i'm guessing that this is not that script.

After "Single White Female 2", "Hollow Man 2", "8 mm 2", "Species 3", & "American Pie: Band Camp" all made money DTV, expect many more of these. All with second rate cast and much eye-candy.

My gut feeling is this will remain true even after completion.

Budget: $45 million
Gross: $90 million

How exactly was this a mistake?

Out of all the titles, I'm really only looking forward to WarGames 2, because as others mentioned maybe we can get a Special Edition out of the first.

I'd probably rent them all. I have a thing for cheesy DTV sequels.

I would hope so.

Why make a WarGames sequel? Why not give it a remake treatment with updated technology? That may prove interesting.

Why just the other day i was thinking:

Man, someone needs to make "Into the Blue 2" and "Legally Blonde 3".

So many questions were left unanswered!

And here i was starting to believe that sequels could be better than the first movie (Spiderman 2, X2).

I don't know. Twenty three years is a very long duration of time in between for a sequel to Wargames. Matthew Broderick, and Ally Sheedy (the two leading casts) may not be interested in reprising their roles.

It could be a retelling of the same story, but in today's technology and terrorism climate.

Don't get me wrong, I love WarGames but, let's face it, the story was a little naive and the computers a little unreal even for 1983. Yet it still works as a product of its time.

I think a sequel or a remake set in the present probably wouldn't work very well.
