This will be Ferrell's top opening, surpassing Elf's $31 million debut. After headlining Bewitched and Kicking and Screaming, I think he needed a big splash like this. Sony, along with Disney, has had a good year at the box office.
Looks like Talladega Nights will have the 3rd highest August opening, behind Rush Hour 2 and Signs. Very impressive.

I actually thought Descent would edge out at #1. Looks like Horror flicks are strongest during school season.

65% drop? I've seen worse. Just goes to show you that there was a lot of mix reaction to the film from folks expecting an action packed film and getting a gritty crime drama with little character development. I wouldn't say bombing. Even putting the budget up there considering the typical Mann film and its potential in the after market.
Suffice to say, it wasn't expected to be a summer OMG blockbuster.

That Disney exec is laughing her ass off (even though she's probably still looking for a job).
No way POTC2 beats Phantom or Shrek 2, though Spider-Man is virtually a lock. Hell of a run though.

Looks as if The Ant Bully will be the first animated release to flop theatrically in quite a while, though it will probably find some attention when it hits DVD.

Had to decide which of the three animated releases to take my 3 1/2-year old to this weekend, and settled on Ant because of a.) the scathing reviews for Barnyard and b.) Monster House's many scares might have been too much for my boy. We both LOVED Ant.
Unfortunately, Ant Bully is going to fade away like Iron Giant did soon after its release. A shame these quality films get trounced by crap like Barnyard.

I also was wondering about the stark performance difference between Barnyard and The Ant Bully, but then I remembered that Barnyard had a trailer that made me and my kids laugh, whereas Ant Bully's didn't. AB had more of an adventure, chase style trailer. That's my memory anyway. This past weekend when given the choice on what to see, the kids (8 and 5 years old) unanimously voted for Barnyard. The bottom line, I think, is that Barnyard did a better job of marketing towards their target audience and decisionmakers - kids. If given the choice between a funny movie and an adventure movie, I think most kids under 10 would pick the funny movie.

Pirates is still making a hell of a lot of money even though its not No 1 anymore - it'll certainly beat Spiderman's taking's worldwide - next target - Shrek 2.
It won't make a billion dollars but only an idiot would moan over numbers like that.
