Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia

This film is based on the true story and adapted from the book by James Elroy (LA Confidential). I am personally excited about it since most of Brian De Palma's works are so uncomforming, incredibly technical and well-shot. Eventhough his recent works have been more of misses than hits (remember Snake Eyes, Mission to Mars, Femme Fatale), I still think De Palma is quite underrated.

By the way, to show how graphic this film can be, take a look at this shot (NOT WORKSAFE!!!):

I've been looking forward to this too because the story is fascinating.

First time seeing that in full color...very interesting and disturbing.

Recreating something like that must have been quite something for the effects artists. Sure, there are 'horror' movie prosthetics created all the time, but this was all-too real, and that makes this completely different.

Doesn't it?

The Josh Harnett voice over reminded me of Sin City. Judging that the trailer seemed to have no clear direction hopefully the movie will not.

I'd hit it.
The only problem (which Ellroy never addressed in the novel) is Elizabeth Short had deformed genitals and was incapable of intercourse.

Any DePalma movie is a must for me - hell, I even liked Femme Fatale. The man has a genuine passion for movies that shows through in everything he does, even if the overall result is less than exhilerating.

The Black Dahlia murder case has interested me for many years. One of the best books I read on the subject is "Severed" By John Gilmore. What I find most interesting is that the LAPD still has files on the case that are under seal.

From the photograph posted, it looks like the special effects people got it spot on. I've seen the real photographs and they are very disturbing.

The real Black Dahlia--Elizabeth Short

I can't wait for this. With Black Dahlia and Zodiac (David fincher), its a good year with quality serial killer movies.

Another reason why this story has always facinated me is it happened not to far from where I grew up in LA.

Saw the trailer for this today...looks like it could be pretty good. Was trying to figure out who the actress was (whose character gets cut up) as she looked very familiar. Realized (for you 24 fans) it's Mandy the assassin!

This movie could be a total piece of sh*t or truly great. That's just how inconsistent Brian DePalma is.

Good to see Mia Kirshner get a role in a major film, but I'm guess that since she's playing Elizabeth Short - her role will be a small one.

She really hasn't been in anything noteworthy since her great performance in Exotica.

I agree though that this film could be great or it could be really bad. The cast leaves me turned off though with the overrated Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Swank starring... and it's a toss up how Hartnett will do. Eckhart's alright though.

If this movie is a piece of sh*t, which is a possibility for sure, it will break my heart. The story of The Black Dahlia has been an obsession of mine for ages. I am very excited about the possibility of a good, worthwhile movie on the story.

Wasn't David Fincher going to direct a Dahlia movie?

How could you overlook her incredible turn in "Not Another Teen Movie" ?

Zodiac was pushed back until next year. Release date is now 1/19/07.

Well, it could be great too because DePalma is capable. I've just never seen a filmmaker that's career was littered with great films and bad films the way his is.

I agree with Terrell. DePalma either makes something for the ages or something that is practically unwatchable. He seems to have no in between.

Good lord! I heard the death of Elizabeth Short was horrific, but that is just ghastly beyond imagination!
