Steely dan's rant on the Butterscotch Stallion

I didn't know whether to put this under the movie or music forum, but since it's regarding a movie I guess I'll post it here. I just read this letter that was posted on their site about 10 days ago addressed to Luke Wilson. They say that Owen Wilson's movie "You, Me and Dupree" stole the character and name of Dupree from a song they made called 'Cousin Dupree'. The letter is located here. Here are the lyrics of the song:

Well I've kicked around a lot since high school
I've worked a lot of nowhere gigs
From keyboard man in a rock'n ska band
To haulin' boss crude in the big rigs
Now I've come back home to plan my next move
From the comfort of my Aunt Faye's couch
When I see my little cousin Janine walk in
All I could say was ow-ow-ouch

(CHORUS:)
Honey how you've grown
Like a rose
Well we used to play
When we were three
How about a kiss for your cousin Dupree

She turned my life into a living hell
In those little tops and tight capris
I pretended to be readin' the National Probe
As I was watchin' her wax her skis
On Saturday night she walked in with her date
And backs him up against the wall
I tumbled off the couch and heard myself sing
In a voice I never knew I had before

(CHORUS)

I'll teach you everything I know
If you teach me how to do that dance
Life is short and quid pro quo
And what's so strange about a down-home family romance?

One night we're playin' gin by a cracklin' fire
And I decided to make my play
I said babe with my boyish charm and good looks
How can you stand it for one more day
She said maybe its the skeevy look in your eyes
Or that your mind has turned to applesauce
The dreary architecture of your soul
I said - but what is it exactly turns you off?

Now, I don't know anything about steely dan, so maybe this is a joke, but are these guys nuts? The song is about some hillbilly who wants to bang his cousin. The movie is about a stereotypical annoying houseguest. Anyone think that their claim has merit?

Its an awful song with an annoying hook.

Im sure they're serious

Assuming this isn't all just a joke...

I think they should have more of a complaint again the writers/producers. It's not like Owen Wilson had anything to do with the naming of his character.

I also find it amusing that a band that stole their name from a steam-powered dildo in the William Burroughs novel Naked Lunch, has a problem with a character in a movie being named after one of their songs. Just a bit hypocritical, isn't it?

God I love Steely Dan.

Well, Owen is one of the Executive Producers...

From IMDB:

Actor Owen Wilson has denied any connection between his new movie, You, Me And Dupree and the 1970s supergroup Steely Dan. The band recently posted a letter on their website claiming Wilson's Dupree character was based on their Grammy-Award winning song, "Cousin Dupree," about a couch-hopping houseguest. They also asked Wilson to appear at a concert to apologize to their fans. In a statement released by his spokeswoman, Ina Treciokas, Wedding Crashers star Wilson said, "I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to work on my new movie, Hey 19." Steely Dan released a string of hits in the 1970s, including "Hey Nineteen," "Reeling In The Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number."

I feel this is all just a gag by Steely Dan, to get their name in the papers and the free promotion that comes with it. Is it just a coincidence that they have a new "greatest hits" cd just released today?

I think it's clear by what Wilson says in the above quote that it's a joke.
