Mako (1933-2006)

He passed on Friday, but I just heard the news.

http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm/story/8682

Mako, an actor well known for his work in the original Broadway production of Pacific Overtures and for his many film and television roles, died on Friday, July 21 of esophageal cancer at his home in Ventura County, California. He was 72
-------------
The arc of Mako's career reflected the progress of Asian Americans in U.S. theater, film, and television. In the 1966 movie The Sand Pebbles, he played the stereotypical Chinese character Po-han and earned an Academy Award nomination. He went on to appear in such films as Pearl Harbor, Seven Years in Tibet, Conan the Barbarian, and Conan the Destroyer, and in such popular TV series as McHale's Navy, I Spy, M*A*S*H*, Quincy, and Walker, Texas Ranger.

Oh fuck.. I dunno what Kevin Munroe is going to do now. At the animation panel at comic con for TMNT, he really really wanted to get Mako to be the voice of Master Splinter. This is also bad for any Conan movies as his pro- and epilogues were awesome and can never be duplicated.

RIP Mako :(

he will be missed.

I concur 100%

Sad news indeed. RIP

RIP Mako :(

I thought he was wonderful in The Sand Pebbles.

How many different roles did he play on M*A*S*H? It seemed like he played a different guy every other week.

I think he played a South Korean, a North Korean, and a Chinese Officer...I also seem to remember him playing an American Officer at one point.

This is terrible news. He was a wonderful actor. It's fitting that I was watching Conan The Barbarian recently.

So any idea how are they going to write out his character in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Another one of those guys whose name you might not immediately recognize, but everyone has seen him in something, even if it was just one of the 240 different roles he played on M*A*S*H.

I was just watching The Sand Pebbles this weekend, and Sidekicks a few days before.

he was great in Conan. RIP

Just heard the news. This is very sad. Much like Pat Morita and James Earl Jones his voice was his signature. Loved him in Conan(especially the intro narration) and his appearance in Pearl Harbor was very striking. He will be missed.

Thanks for all the great moments, Mako

He was the voice of Aku in Samurai Jack.

RIP Mako. :(

That's sad news. When I get home I think I will watch the episode of Green Hornet where he fought Bruce Lee.

Wasn't that Lo Lieh? Or did Bruce fight them both?

Groucho 07-27-06 12:22 PM

Great actor whose contributed a lot.

It's my understanding that whenever there was a casting dilemma, he was often the go-to guy...hence the phrase "Uh-oh, better get Mako!"

Watched it last night. It's been a long time since I last watched it 'cause I forgot during the fight scene it was actually Danny Inosanto doing the fighting for Mako as his stunt double. You can see Danny's face during the fight w/ Bruce. Lo Sing was Mako's character in "The Preying Mantis" ep.

Oh, ok. I've never seen the episode, but I saw a trailer for it that had a caption saying "Kato meets Lo something". Always thought it was Lo Leih. Interesting to know!
