Looks like POTC2 is gonna drop bigger than expected. Possibly in the $55 million range. I was thinking around $65-$70 million.

sabre 07-15-06 04:06 PM

America is truly a country in decline if Little Man can make 7.5 million on it's opening day.

Ms. M 07-15-06 04:07 PM

It looks like Superman Returns will not make it to 200 million domestically, which makes the odds of a sequel, at least one with Singer, pretty unlikely. As much as I enjoyed POTC2, the rejection of Superman Returns by audiences saddens me.

Ranger 07-15-06 04:21 PM

I thought Superman Returns was okay. But just because it's a superman movie doesn't mean the people owe it anything more than it deserves.

Pirates definitely looks like the biggest movie of the summer.

gotrice487 07-15-06 05:01 PM

If Superman Returns stays in the theatres long enough, it might hit the $200 million mark

SPiRAL 07-15-06 05:22 PM

Little Man made profit on friday alone. I read the budget was $6 millilon.

That had to be a joke, the waynes brothers alone have to clear more than that. After the Scary Movies and White Chicks (all made tons of money) I can't imagine them making a film for $6 million

Yeah, I think SPiRAL left off a zero.

From CBS News:

And Shawn and Marlon promptly agreed to do just that, if "Little Man" makes $120 million at the box office. (They say it cost about $60 million to make the film.)
I read that the movie has over 1,000 effects shots, and I don't think you could pull off something like that for such a small budget. Six mil doesn't go as far as it did in Steve Austin's day.

Matthew Chmiel 07-15-06 07:18 PM

Can't the fucking Wayans Brothers just agree to stop making films?

I liked Supes myself, but the one complaint I've heard over and over about it I do have to kinda agree with - it was too glum. If they make a sequel, I hope it captures some of the lightheartedness Reeve brought to it. Singer just took it a little TOO seriously. Let the Man of Steel smile a little!

Mr. Cinema 07-15-06 07:54 PM

I think Superman will go past $200 million. It's taken only 17 days to earn $155 million, but I forgot about today's standards. If a film doesn't make $200 million in 10 days, it's a failure.

This version of Superman's budget shouldn't be penalized for that extra/wasted $50 million spent on Tim Burton, Nicolas Cage, McG, etc....

I don't think audiences aren't turning out in droves because of its budget.

I believe audience have said these exact words about a superhero film before....Hulk.

I think Warner Bros is going to keep Superman in theatres atleast until it makes over 200 million. I think it'll end with about 205 million. I think a sequel is a given, they are huge money makers. The X-men films made progressively more money.

gryffinmaster 07-16-06 02:02 AM

The very reason that Superman is ice-skating uphill to $200m is the same reason that I thoroughly enjoyed the film - it is darker than Superman film fans are used to.

Man, BV's summer champions (PotC, Cars) looks to have made around double what the other studios have so far this summer. Not a shocker considering the source material, but still interesting.

Jackskeleton 07-16-06 02:19 AM

Superman is following the same model that Batman Begins ran through. Look at their daily average and you'll see that superman is just 10 million above what Batman begins was by this point in both their runs.

Batman crossed the 200 million mark. I expect Superman to make about 10 million more than Batman Begins.

The key here is that it has some legs in the long run of things mainly because of that summer crowd.

Because people like them, they make money, and are relatively entertaining?

Not exactly my cup of coffee. But then I guess some might consider me and art fuck.

I really want to see Superman. But still haven't gotten around to it. Actually, I haven't gotten to the movies much in the past month. I think I'll go right now. Bye.

slabinskia 07-16-06 11:22 AM

POTC2 made an estimated $62 million this weekend. That's about what I was expecting.

Kocheese99 07-16-06 11:28 AM

That just about finishes any hope that POTC2 would get to the Titanic Record. But, should still pull in about $400 million.

Not that I think it will ,but why would it making "only" $62 million this weekend stop it from beating Titanics record? Titanic's biggest weekend was only in the 30 millions and it still got there.

slabinskia 07-16-06 11:48 AM

Why would anyone think that it could reach $600 million in the first place ? That is setting the expectations way too high. I know it had the highest weekend of all time, but $600 million is unrealistic in my opinion.

Troy Stiffler 07-16-06 11:55 AM

Titanic was an accident (hehe ... is that a new pun?). A fluke. A genuinely well made movie. A work of cinematic eloquence. But it's BO gross was something of a freakish nature (especially bringing those bucks back in '97).

The next movie to beat Titanic will be the same thing - a fluke. No matter how big a movie is. How grand it is. How hyped it is. How well-liked it is. That is all just irrelevant.

My proof is Spiderman.

I'm suprised to see Cars doing so well. I saw both Cars and Over the Hedge. Strictly based on the entertainment value, I preferred Over the Hedge. Cars reminded me of the kind of CG movies that Pixar DOESN'T make. Very little entertainment for the adults. The only memorable part was when the one rusty car yelled Freebird. The physics were distracting. I couldn't help but try to rationalize how this universe works through the whole movie. And the first 3/4 of the movie just seemed heartless and dull. Not enough sappy moments, I guess. Additionally, there was very little energy in the packed theater. I thought this would have died a lot faster.

Anyways, still plan to see Superman, Dead Man's Chest, and *maybe* An Inconvenient Truth.

I just think that if POTC2 had any shot at getting to Titanic's record, then it needed to do better than 50% drop. Sure, If POTC2 gets into a groove and makes 20 million every weekend for a month and half then it still has a shot. With the way the marketplace is these days, they really needed a 40% drop to have a shot. Hey, I could be wrong, who though Titanic would do 600 million?

slabinskia 07-16-06 12:27 PM

POTC2 still has the highest 10 day total record and will prabably match ROTS's fastest to 300mil record next weekend. It won't come close to titanic, but it will likely pass off Spiderman while it seems unlikely, it has a shot at finishing #2 all time domestic behind titanic. Star Wars made $460mil. Anyone think POTC2 can reach that ?

FantasticVSDoom 07-16-06 12:42 PM

Well, eventhough Superman wasnt as good as I was expecting, (enjoyed it, but didnt love it) I actually think this could be one where a part 2 will be better than the first, ala Xmen 2. As long as there is no Luthor mind you. So in that regards, I do hope there is a sequel. I still think Click is the "hit" of the summer just because I am so surprised it did so well. Obviously its not as big a money maker as other, but for it to make as much bank as it has is really surprising to me. I guess Sandler can really pull in the money still.

Terrell 07-16-06 01:49 PM

Nope, it will probably catch ROTS! Depends on how much it keeps dropping. Even a worst case scenario it makes 350 million. But it won't get 450+ million. In fact, I'm not sure it can catch TPM. Next week's drop will tell the tale.
