Most successful product placements
 

Watching Smokey and the Bandit SE I remmeber what an impact the movie had on Trans Am sales. In 1977 dealers were adding a surcharge to the sticker of new T/A's due to the overwhelming demand. I remember finding a used 76 that I was able to buy. Recently at a car show I was speaking with a lady about my age and she told me, she's owned the car since new. She bought the car the day after seeing Smokey and the Bandit.

I remember the release of ET had a remarkable effect on Reeses Pieces sales also. So much so another candy company made a copycat movie just to try and spark sales in their candy.

I was just curious as to other high profile, successful product placements there were. Anyone else buy a car because of a movie?

Not really a product, but Top Gun did wonders for the all branches of the armed services.

I don't know if Back To the Future helped sales of DoLorians, but I'm pretty sure GoldenEye boosted sales of that year's BMW convertible.

I immediately thought of Marty sitting at the soda fountain saying, "Gimme a Pepsi Free".

Guy responds, "If you want a Pepsi, you'll have to pay for it!"

What about "The Wizard" and Super Mario Bros. 3? :)

I seem to remember hearing a story that Spielberg originally wanted M&Ms in E.T. but they refused thus leading him to his second choice: Reese's Pieces.

I didn't personally buy one after seeing it, but I did start to notice the sales explosion of Mini Coopers after The Italian Job came out.

While not a product per se, I think I heard the sales of Clown fish increased significantly after Finding Nemo

I was going to say that. I'm sure it would have sold roughly the same without the movie but back then news traveled alot slower and that was the first me and my friends had ever seen of the game. I was just about doing backflips when they showed that game in the movie.

On the flipside, Lucas and his stupid Powerglove made me waste a christmas present on that worthless piece of crap.

I bet the Bond movies sold a few Austin-Healeys

I remember a big boost to people wanting to join the Navy submarine corps after Hunt for Red October played.

Not like McDonald's needed the boost in sales, but I know I wanted some Mickey Dee's really bad after watching Bye Bye Love starring Paul Raiser.

I'm still waiting for Disney to put out a Tron energy drink!

The live action 101 Dalmations with Glenn Close dramatically increased sales of dalmations. I'm no dog expert, but supposedly they make shitty pets.

The live action Garfield with Jennifer Love Hewitt dramatically increased interest in pretty girls with large breasts.

What was very interesting was that the movie version of Josie and the Pussycats actually was a satire on the very concept of product placement.

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle significantly increased the naming of children "Kumar". I now have three cousins named Kumar and a little brother.

How did Pan-Am do out of that big sign in Blade Runner?

My friend seems to think that Microsoft did an extremely good job in product placements for "The Island." Now, he thinks that the X-Box 360 and MSN will be prominently featured in next year's "The Transformers." (X-Box 360 Tranformer?)

Yea. Dalmations are the most dangerous "domestic" dogs in the world because they have very bad tempers and have the strongest jaws which produce the most bite (just ahead of Rotweilers).

I thought the problem with Dalmations is that they are extemely hyper dogs and require alot of attention.

I thought of Reese's Pieces too.


What about Starsky and Hutch and the Gran Torino? Wasn't a huge seller but it did sell quite a few of those.
