Hollywoodland

Saw this linked over at AICN... this is about the investigation into George Reeves' death. The trailer looks pretty good to me, although I know many will probably cringe over Ben Affleck.

Looks interesting. I'll definately check it out. Looks like everybody's jumping on the Superman bandwagon these days

I've always liked Affleck (even if he has chosen some roles poorly) but for those who don't at least
Spoiler:
he ends up dead
in this.

Shannon Nutt 07-06-06 03:24 PM

It's a shame Golden had to spoil that above comment, isn't it? Of course, I got yelled at in TITANIC when I mentioned the boat sinking while waiting for the movie to start (and no, I'm NOT kidding!).

From the previews, I'm wondering if we ever see Affleck totally in costume...it looks like maybe DC/Warners forbid the movie from using any visible Superman logo.

JumpCutz 07-06-06 03:44 PM

This looks excellent. Looks like a cross between 'Auto Focus' and 'Wonderland'. Great cast and this could be a vehicle more suited to Affleck's somewhat limited talents. He's playing George Reeves, who was himself a pretty limited talent.

Of the half-dozen trailers I saw yesterday, this was the only one that didn't make me cringe - it does look as if it will be interesting at the minimum.

Draven 07-07-06 08:18 AM

Wow, that actually looks pretty good. And it's a story I really don't know anything about, so I'm doubly interested.

And I've never really disliked Affleck, so I'm glad to see him in something with a decent cast and (what appears to be) an interesting story.

This movie looks very good.

The Apple website has a better version of the trailer.

Saw the trailer this weekend before Scoop. Picking up the first season of the original TV series rekindled my interest in finding out more about Reeve's demise, so this will be a must-see for me.

i thought it looked pretty promising and interesting, we shall see when i go see it.

Giles 08-17-06 05:01 PM

since I fell asleep on it last night I actually can't make any good or bad comments on it - oh well.

Geofferson 09-08-06 10:51 AM

Reviews have been generally favorable:

Just the fact that you fell asleep on it should immediately put some weight on the bad comment side :)

Dexter Douglas 09-08-06 12:32 PM

This was actually my first press screening. Should've been a lot better, but it also could have been worse.

BuddyRevell 09-08-06 02:15 PM

If I didn't hate Affleck so much I might have given this a try. Just the mere sight of him makes me cringe.

fernsita 09-08-06 02:30 PM

I actually think he looks good in this role! I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the previews it looks like he may doa decent job.

Geofferson 09-08-06 04:27 PM

Just got back from seeing this. Affleck wasn't half bad. Brody and Lane both did solid jobs. The story was intriguing for a while, but ran out of steam in the last act (movie was about 20 minutes too long).

Slowpc 09-08-06 06:47 PM

Just got out of it earlier too and I felt the same way as Geofferson. If they cut a few things here and there to make it a little bit shorter it could have worked a bit better. It overall was not that bad.

I agree with you and Geofferson. Brody and Lane did great jobs. Affleck wasn't half bad either, although he doesn't bother me as much as he does alot of others.

Back from an evening screening -- I'm pretty impressed with the movies as a whole.

Great acting, great cinematography, great costuming and art direction in general.

It is a little long and it seems to say "woe is us" about the people in Hollywood. That makes me cringe a little, but the film is a bit unfocused so its hard to say if I got the right idea.

Al Padrino 09-08-06 09:16 PM

I was impressed with Affleck looking less than perfect. He obviously put on some weight to play the role and he did an admirable job. Rarely was I thinking, "Hey, that's Ben Affleck up there."

The seamless editing of the "current" time with flashbacks was probably the most enjoyable aspect of the film for me.

I got just the opposite impression about Hollywood. The film seemed to make the point that the business is seedy and those involved will do anything they can to ensure their ticket sales aren't affected.

PopcornTreeCt 09-08-06 10:06 PM

I thought the movie was pretty good. It could've been a lot better.
Spoiler:
I felt that the ending was meant to give us the impression that the movie was really about Adrien Brody and his family, but that wasn't really estabilished enough throughout. Also, the movie left a lot of questions still in there. I first left the movie thinking that Reeves killed himself but then a lot of other stuff doesn't add up. I guess the point of the movie is "we'll never know".

Al Padrino 09-09-06 12:42 AM

I didn't think it was trying to tell us one way or the other how Reeves got shot. It just presented various scenarios that could've happened, but like you said, it all boils down to us never knowing for sure.

Interesting that both this and The Black Dahlia are opening within a week of each other. They could make an interesting double feature.
