The Village recut? Possible spoilers if you haven't seen the movie

Just to let you know this post probably contains spoilers for the Village and I don't know how to use spoiler tags. I doubt there are many people out there that would care about The Village being spoiled but you never know.

Anyway, I can't remember if it was this forum or somewhere else (I did a quick search and didn't find anything) but somebody made a clip of a re-edited version of the Village which made it a FAR better movie in my opinion--at least in regards to the twist. I was wondering if anybody knows where I might find the clip.

It's been a while since I saw the movie but if I remember right the girl is walking through the woods and it cuts to a flashback of the elder taking her to the shack and she touches the monster costume and she realizes it is all a hoax. Then the "monster" shows up and they have a scuffle and the 2 of them fall into the pit and a little later on the camera pans back up and we see the dude dressed up as the monster as he is dying. This didn't make a lot of sense to me because when the monster showed up we already knew that it was fake.

The recut had the monster show up and we still thought that it was real. Then they fell into the pit and then after that as we are still thinking that the girl is possibly being killed by the monster the flashback scene comes up and shows that it is a hoax and then the camera pans up to show the guy dressed up and stuck in the pit.

I don't know who's idea it was to have the flashback sequence before the monster reveal, but it was a very poor decision in my opinion. I honestly believe if the original movie had been edited the way I just described a lot of people would have felt differently about it.

I think the intention of showing the flashback before the encounter was to make everyone not worried about the monsters. But when she hears the sounds in the woods, it plays the voice over of William Hurt repeating what he said earlier about there being rumors of monsters in the woods. So I suppose it was supposed to re-plant the seed of doubt when they put in the voice over. The design of the monster in the woods was intentionally made to look more menacing than the previous one. I think they wanted people to believe that the village was being attacked by impostors, but the woods was inhabited by the real deal.

I'm not saying it worked, I'm just hypothesizing as to why it was made that way.

I actually understood it.

I think I prefer it the way it came out.

Not that I'm saying I like the movie much....

I too think the idea was how they weren't completely sure. He said there were rumors and stories of monsters in the woods, so when she came fact to face with one, we knew the one in the village was fake, but we didn't know that someone had stolen the costume at that point. So we (at least I) assumed it may have been a real monster.

I think this was a problem (among many others) with the film. The recut sounds better.

The recut sounds much better. It wouldn't have completely fixed the movie for me, though, as my biggest problem with it is the central concept of the story. Specifically, that the deceits are only as elaborate as they are to trick the audience; they didn't need to be that elaborate to trick the characters within the film.
