Weekend Box Office Thread 6/16 - 6/18
Here are Friday's numbers from Showbiz Data:
1. NACHO LIBRE PARAMOUNT 3,070 10,925,000 3,559 n/a 10,925,000
2. FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT UNIVERSAL 3,026 9,225,000 3,049 n/a 9,225,000
3. CARS BUENA VISTA 3,988 8,949,000 2,244 -53% 92,300,509
4. LAKE HOUSE, THE WARNER BROS. 2,645 5,065,000 1,915 n/a 5,065,000
5. BREAK-UP, THE UNIVERSAL 3,141 3,254,000 1,036 -52% 85,675,000
6. GARFIELD: A TALE OF TWO KITTIES 20TH CENTURY FOX 2,945 2,390,000 812 n/a 2,390,000
7. X-MEN: THE LAST STAND 20TH CENTURY FOX 2,810 2,133,000 759 -56% 210,588,000
8. OMEN, THE 20TH CENTURY FOX 2,723 1,849,000 679 -67% 43,389,064
9. DA VINCI CODE, THE SONY 3,319 1,450,000 437 -53% 194,928,802
10. OVER THE HEDGE PARAMOUNT 2,606 1,240,000 476 -58% 135,959,043
I think Cars can equal or do better today than the top 2, which could help retain its top spot for the weekend. Nacho Libre didn't get the greatest reviews, but a near $30 million opening should make Paramount very happy. I don't think their Summer schedule had too many releases, aside from M:I 3.

No shit. Especially with marketing and first run network rights who the fuck knows or cares when a film "makes a profit"
It made a fuck ton of money. Pretty god damn simple as that.

nah, cause I'm sure folks will complain till it makes a "Mother fuck'n fuck ton" load of cash.
So anyhow. Nacho.. I'm not sure what to think. It was a pretty split weekend. Both Fast and Furious and Nacho seemed to appeal to the same target for the most part. Nacho seems to be the winner but man that's odd.

well, considering I have stated and gotten into a multiple page rant about how much I actually hated X3 and how I generally thought the previous two films were "meh-ish" at best... not to mention how I said I thought everything that Fox has put out related to Marvel comics is pretty much terrible.. I wouldn't consider it bias at all.
At the time of its theater run King Kong looked pretty bleak. Both in how long it was and how much it was grossing. It eventually turned over to the point where it looked good on paper. But for the most part X3 has been a success money wise from the get going. From its opening box office take in and even through it's declines and drops from week to week.
I never stated that X3 wouldn't make the 200+ that it has, but I did say that the quality of the film is just so terrible.

Nacho looks terrible, everybody i work with was saying how awful the trailer looked.
We were discussing if jack black would have a career left after the movie. Obviously i haven't seen it, so who knows. I guess i am finally getting old. by the way i enjoyed x3 a lot more than king kong, first hour of king kong was so boring. x3 I enjoyed quite a bit, glad to see it making 200 plus.

Not surprisingly, Cars' Saturday number of $12.9 million was enough to push it to #1. But with a 48% drop, I'm not sure it will have enough legs to be one of the top 5 grossers. I believe this is also the biggest 2nd weekend % decrease of all the Pixar movies.
I think 4 of the top movies will be X3, Da Vinci Code, POTC 2, and Superman Returns. Not sure who the 5th slot will go to. Miami Vice, Monster House, Click and Lady in the Water are the only movies left I think that could turn out to be big hits. Cars could possibly still make it, but I'm not sure it'll reach $200 million.

Looks like Break-Up will break $100MM.
Your anecdotal evidence is sure enough to convince me of what I will think of that movie.

Does anyone else find it a little odd that there's 4 major releases crammed into this weekend (Fast and Furious, Nacho Libre, Garfield 2, and Lake House)? It makes me wonder why the studios didn't spread these releases out, since Fast and Nacho are both competing for the same teen demographic, and Garfield is going head to head with last week's Cars. Garfield would have probably opened much stronger in August when there's less kids fare coming out.

But as for cramming it into this weekend, I think the studios saw it was open. Therei sn't a single major tentpole movie out there, which opens it up to more broad based films with more limited appeal. None of these movies were gong to be pushing 50 million plus openings, so that allows them to open alongside each other. Though Garfield was a total misfire.

Nacho Libre and FF3 both should drop alot next weekend since Click will be going after the same audience. Another reason for a large drop is they both lost over 10% of their business on Saturday.
Also noticed that Cars is playing on over 900 more screens than Nacho Libre, which had the best per screen average of the top 10. I'm sure that also had something to do with retaining the top spot.
