"AFI's 100 Years...100 Cheers" Discussion Thread
Now this is a list. Now, on CBS (6/14). AFI's most inspirational movies. 3 hours of sheer inspiration. I mean the clips of the movies I haven't seen are giving me chills. And forget about the ones I have. Forget Bravo and their inane comedy list. This is a list and so far one hell of a special.

I can't believe The Shawshank Redemption is only #23
Yeah, pretty good list so far. I'm watching right now and they are about to start the top ten. Some of the ones they've already covered could, IMO, have easily been in the top five, so the top ten had better be good!
At the risk of offending the female posters here, I can't believe Working Girl and Erin Brockovich made the cut.
*SPOILER ALERT* And remember, the "inspirational characters" drive off a cliff to their deaths at the end of Thelma and Louise. |

I also think The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King belongs somewhere on the list.
I can't believe Superman(1978) didn't make it at all in the top 100! I also agree with you guys about Shawshank. It should have been around 5 or 6.
What about Scarface. That should be #1. The guy goes from an immigrant who has nothing to the top of the drug game. If thats not inspirational, then I don't know what is.
One of the problems with these "Top *** Movies" lists is always the people they get to interview and provide commentaries about the movies. This show had some great, relevant commentators--Sidney Poitier, Sally Field, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Jane Fonda, Ben Kingsley, Kirk Douglas. Even Ralph Macchio was at least in one of the films on the list. But why the hell did they have Melissa Ethridge providing comments? And she was the one they used most often! I have nothing against the lady, but couldn't they have gotten someone else--someone who is actually involved in making movies?
What exactly is inspirational about 2001?
2001 is about transendence on many levels. It is highly inspirational. More than E.T., which somehow made it into the top 10.
I'd guess E.T. is inspirational on a more basic level than 2001 thus being identifiable to more people.
I was surprised Braveheart was way back at 62, I thought it'd be in the top 15 at least. |

I thought the exact same thing.
Glad to see The Karate Kid, Rudy and Glory on the list.
I agree with the lower ratings on Braveheart and Shawshank. Those pivotal moments in the latter portions of the films should definitely secure top 10 status, imho. |
Harold and Maude is an odd choice. I think it's a great movie, but it certainly didn't inspire me whatsoever (to fall in love with an elderly woman).
How did The Last Starfighter not make the list? I know it inspired me.
Other notable films which did not make the Top 100:
Superman The Natural Papillon Patton Titanic Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Fantasia Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Dumbo |
Patton didn't make it?!?
Nope. Neither did Hoop Dreams or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I'm not a big fan of most of these movies. And if there's any that I do like, it's not because I found them inspirational, or for whatever reason they made this list.

Oh man Hoop Dreams! That should have definitely been on there!
I was wondering why Cinderella Man didn't make it, but then I saw that movies released on January 1st of last year or later weren't eligible.
