This makes sense.

Did anyone see the Cruel Intentions TV Pilot that never made air? It leaked on the net a few years ago. SMG returned and the story was set up revolving the older son of Witherspoon and Philippe’s characters. They used a different actor to play Witherspoon’s character. I actually found it fun and it was a little risqué for network TV.

Didn't know about the TV Pilot but I do remember watching the direct to video sequel.

Welcome back to Manchester Prep. In 1999, audiences gaped (and gasped) as Hollywood’s teen royalty engaged in sexual debauchery and 1-percenter power games in Roger Kumble’s erotic, darkly comedic modern classic, which returns to theaters Friday in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Here, in an EW exclusive, the filmmakers and cast members revisit the original tale of gossip girls and pretty little liars.

I liked this film. I'm a fan of mean spirited dark comedies and this is certainly one of those.
Yup, a direct one and a strong one to boot. You have to think that Phillipe is doing a Malcovich impression but the rest of the performances are kind of their own thing.
It was a smart adaptation in the sense that the original was all about one's reputation and how valuable that is. Moving the setting to High School at the Millennium was a clever concept because your reputation absolutely matters there and is as important as anything.
