Who Collects Mylars?
 

You know, the banners for films that are hung in the front of the auditoriums to let you know which movie is playing in which theater?

I got started collecting them when I applied for a job at a Landmark and I asked if I could have one as I was always interested in possessing one. The manager agreed and then... I got hooked.

I get them through various ways: theaters, eBay, bartering, etc. I don't have a lightbox, though, but one day.

wow, impressive, that's a lot. but what do you do with them? a lot of them don't really have much other than the text, very few graphics...wouldn't a poster or something be cooler?

Posters are cool, but become drab after a while.

Mylars are rare collectibles and help enhance the theatrical experience. When I watch a movie, I usually have it out on display, until I can afford a lightbox.

I collect the large 5 x 25 mylars. Some of the older ones can be hard to track down. Have about 100. I have two lightboxes that each holds three vertically. Also have a NOW PLAYING and COMING SOON mylar. There are lightboxes all over ebay.

How much longer are they going to be around though. I know a lot of the newer theaters are going with the scrolling electronic signs, i don't know the official names for them but someone has to know what i mean.
When i first started working in theaters i would collect them, then when i went to projection i started with trailers and frames(since they throw them away) from films that had been spliced for one reason or another. Which arn't as cool as mylars

mylars have gone the way of the dodo around here. We get LED text only message displaying the movie title and time.

Michael, what theater do you usually go to in Louisville.

Stonybrook. Tinsletown still uses them though. Where do you work?

I started out at Stonybrook, but i got a manager job when the Showcase 16 opened. I got laid off when SC on Bardstown Rd closed. Still go there and Stonybrook since enough of the managers still know me and will give me passes. And on the odd chance Baxter actually gets arthouse films, i'll go there.

i'd never collect mylars. posters only for me.

I've got a bunch from the early 90s rolled up somewhere- one time I closed on March 31st (next day being April Fool's Day) so I got out some old and ridiculous mylars (like Muppet Christmas Carol and Home Alone 2) and changed the ones that were up above the theater doors- I put the right ones in the box office so they'd be easily found and changed back though.

A vote for no, as I had no clue what a Mylar even was :)

They look cool, although the theaters i frequent have been digital scrolling text for years now.
