B. Paxton's comments about 'Haven' in his DVD talk interview
While Mr. Paxton's comments about 'Haven', the Yari Film Group production due for theatrical release Sep. 15, 2006, were unsavory, aintitcool.com's recent review of the movie is positive. I encourage all of us to go see this movie when it is released and judge for ourselves.

Hmmm lemmie see. A review posted to Aint it Cool vs. The lead actor who worked on the film and has seen both cuts.. Damn just don't know who to go with here...
I know... The fanboy hypemachine...
Seriously... can you say SIX STRING SAMURAI
""This is a celebration of film making... Remember when you first saw Mel Gibson in Road Warrior, or Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead 2? Well, this film has someone as cool or...dare I say...cooler. Jeffrey Falcon. He is a pop-god in waiting. The single coolest being I've seen in cinema in quite some time." - Harry Knowles, Ain't It Cool News "
How about a review from someone who isn't kissing studio ass:
http://www.efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=10450
But maybe you're just a huge Orlando Bloom fan... and as such you should probably be outraged to hear that the producer stepped in and ruined what could have probably been a better film.

However, back to my original statement -- rather than go by what Paxton said, or by what AICN said, or efilmcritic, let's see for ourselves.

I'm one of those 'long-time lurkers, first-time posters'. Thought I would now, as I have something to add - I'm one of those few who saw "Haven" when I visited the Toronto FF in 2004. Yes, I happen to like Orlando Bloom, and I also like Bill Paxton. I thought the plot sounded interesting, and the Caymanian connection piqued my curiosity.
I think that people who perform in or work on a film (not that I've done either) always try to go in with a positive attitude when they see it with an audience for the first time. They often see things that the average moviegoer doesn't, because they know of the work that has gone into making it. They have 'baggage', be it positive or negative. We sit and watch and normally state our gut reaction afterwards. I see a lot of films, and can usually find something I like in just about anything. (Well, unless Tom Cruise is in it, that is.)
I liked Haven, but I could also see its flaws. Not so much in what was there, but in how it was presented (in other words, the fast editing of multiple storylines). I had no problem follow it at all, but not everyone can. (No, I'm not 'special'.) Frequently, in order to make a film more marketable, some changes may have to be made following that initial preview. And I could see that changes did need to be made, although I don't think they needed to be in any way drastic. (Paxton makes it sound drastic, but of course we don't know the particulars.)
Paxton, MiraJeff (AICN), and I obviously came to the film with different viewpoints and ideas. I only saw the 'original', I'm assuming that MJ saw the 'new', and Paxton saw both. But, again, watching something as a mere observer vs. someone who was involved from the beginning are two different animals. It's easy enough to say "well, a lot of Paxton's storyline must have been cut"; I'd like to think he's more of a professional than that. Maybe he was fond of the director and hated to see someone else edit it. There could be a lot of non-objective reasons for what he said.
Reviews are purely subjective - you learn to go with those who have similar tastes to your own.
Bottom line, I'll probably go see it again when it's released, because I did like it, and it will be interesting to see if it has fundamentally 'changed' from what I saw. I do hope that others will give it a chance in spite of Paxton's comments.

DVD Talk Godfather
Yikes. I was almost going to see this tonight (based on the strength of the trailer), but the movie is getting trashed here, in IMDB, and on Rotten Tomatoes. Not worth the hr+ drive to get to the theatre, I think.
