great great flick. one of my favorites. And i think that article is in the 100 movies you have to see before you die issue with Elisha Cuthbert on the cover.
do you all think that had this been released today, it be a hit?

it'd definitely be a hit, but then people would be like "how did christian slater get so young looking all of the sudden?"

this may bump dvd sales/rentals a little bit.

Great article. I've loved True Romance from the first time I saw it. One of my favorite movies.

This movie has been a classic with me since the first time i saw it. The cast is just perfect. Chris Walken and Dennis Hooper scene is legendary. The script was amazing. A lot of people will disagree with me, but i think this has been the best Tarantino movie made. A lot of people will say Pulp Fiction...and i love that movie too, but for me True Romance was just a better movie all round. Gary Oldman went from great actor to god in this movie. How the hell does he make each character so different? Surely thats the sign of a truly great actor. The kinetic style of Tony Scott really took the experience to another level. The soundtrack was great also. I watched it again a few weeks ago with Reservoir Dogs. Both great movies, but whereas Dogs seems a little more meandering than it once used to Romance moves along like a bullet. For me the early Tarantino movies were great and he has slowly declined. The Kill Bill movies were ok, but nothing really great IMO, and Death Proof was just plain horrible. I hope that Inglorious Bastards will get him back to creating stand out scripts and movies.

I remember renting it on video back in early '94 before I'd seen Reservoir Dogs and before the release of Natural Born Killers and Pulp Fiction. So this was really my first exposure to Tarantino's style of writing.
I thought the movie was ok at the time. I think it's great now that I've rewatched it on DVD, but I still feel that Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette were sort of miscast. Or maybe it's just that they're severely outclassed by all the actors in supporting roles.
The other problem is its best scene(I think you know which one I'm referring to) is halfway through the movie. That leaves Slater and Arquette to pick up the slack for the remaining 45 minutes and they fail to do so.

I was one of those few that saw it opening weekend. Can't remember if I saw this before or after DOGS, but (As I was watching ROMANCE) I was still warming up to know what to expect from Tarantino. Not just the dialogue, but certain scenes that were capable of throwing me off:
-Is that other guy in the bathroom really there?
-WTF did that "Acting audition" scene have to do with the movie?
-Isn't the Chris Walken character supposed to come back?
Though the friend that I saw the movie with disliked it, I kept the movie sharp in mind and couldn't await the video release. If I'm not mistaken, the film's premiere on HBO was the Director's Cut. I haven't seen the R-version in ages.

I love this movie.
I remember when I first saw it, coincidentally I had rented Reservoir Dogs the same night. I didn't know who Quentin Tarantino was then and thought it was cool that he had written both movies. I was blown away by both that night and was at Pulp Fiction opening night as a result.

Great article. I've always loved this movie... except for the Jamaican/steel drum score. It's terrible. If the performances and script weren't so damn good it might have killed it for me. It's kinda been a while since I last watched it, though. This thread makes me want to revisit it again.

Wow, I loved that article. Tom Sizemore's comment about going to jail was priceless.
Also was blown away that except for Pitt, Walken, and Kilmer the entire cast was interviewed, although it's great knowing Pitt highly regards this one. I love these type of "oral histories" on movies...EW had a good one for E.T. when it was rereleased and Premiere did one for Carrie when the last SE came out. Sometimes ends up more intimate than what a DVD feature can do.
And Bronson Pinchot reading dialogue in his Balki voice

I've been a big fan of this since I first saw it upon it's VHS release.
I last saw it in theaters about 3 years ago at a midnight showing in a packed house and introduced it to a friend of mine. He loved the film to! It was amusing hearing some people comment that "Hey they changed the ending a bit,it's not like that on the dvd!". Since of course the version shown was the R rated version and not the unrated.
I've seen the film many many times since it was first released on video. It holds up well I think and is an all time favorite of mine. I'm going to have to watch the dvd again sometime.

what fantastic film...
just an incredible example of film making...
that scene in the trailer with Walken and Hopper is one of the finest exchanges in film history...
i forget how many 'dips' i did on this one...
but that last director's, extended, 'blah blah blah' release was terrific...

Something tells me that Walken would still play the Don and Oldman would still play Drexl
