"Everything is Illuminated" ? (minor spoilers)

Just saw this and liked it very much. Very weirdly mesmerizing (if that makes any sense). The performances, especially Alex's were funny and moving and just real good.

Couple questions...
1. how did Augustine excatly save Jonathan's grandfather from the Nazis?
2. Alex's grandfather was Baruch and the Jew who didn't die at the firing squad, correct?
3.
Spoiler:
is there any clues as to why he killed himself?

Presumably by sending him off to America ahead of her and the baby.

2.
Spoiler:

3. I don't know. I really hated this movie so by that point I didn't care.

Spoiler:
My husband and I watched this yesterday. We thought he killed himself because he betrayed himself and his people by not living his life as a Jewish person. He constantly called Jewish people names and did not acknowledge that he was one himself.

Just watched it last night and here's my take:
Spoiler:

1. I don't think she did anything to actively save his life other than giving him a reason to coincidentally not be there at the time. If they knew the Nazi's were coming and the consequences, I'm guessing he would have taken her with him.
2. Yes, that is how I saw it
3. It could be guilt, but for me at least, that would not explain the contentment on his face. My guess is that he came to terms again with that part of his life which "illuminated" him and gave him some closure. To use a poor analogy I felt it was like the ending to Titanic where old Rose was finally able to die happy after gaining closure with her past.

Also Those were some of the wackiest deleted scenes I have ever seen when compared against the overall movie. Some of them made me think
