They Live!

Anyone seen this?

It's such a great film.

Roddy Piper (The former WWF wrestler..unless he still wrestles) is in this, it's so funny. Then there's a fight between him and Keith David that goes on for a good 10 minutes.

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum."

woot!

Oh yeah, to my question. This is the only John Carpenter film I have. Is there any others he's done like this?

If you like John Carpenter films more in that mold, try Big Trouble in Little China. The hero is similar in style.

Essential Carpenter Films IMO:

Halloween
The Thing
In the Mouth of Madness

Thank goodness you're talking about the movie, I thought this was an announcement of another remake!

Big Trouble in Little China. Fun times. It does a good job of mixing the comedy with the action. Kurt Russell at his best! The Thing is also excellent, though that's more of a mix of action and horror. Again, Kurt Russell at his best! If you're a fan of James Woods, you could check out Vampires, as he's the only redeeming thing about the movie. Ghosts of Mars... well, it does have quite a bit of comedy, albeit of the unintentional variety.

Ive always liked John Carpenter... I mean Halloween, The Thing, BTILC, They Live, Escape from NY - most directors dont make 5 classic movies in their whole career and he did it in pretty much a 10 year span.

But wtf has happened since then?! Vampires was mediocre, and Ghosts of Mars was a disaster imo.

They Live is awesome. I am heading to my girlfriend's dad's house today for something. I'm going to have to steal They Live from him when he's not looking.

They Live
The Thing
Escape from New York
Big Trouble in Little China

All great movies.

Trigger 03-10-06 10:24 AM

One of my favorites from my youth...

TheNightFlier 03-10-06 11:28 AM

One of my favorites from Carpenter. If you liked it definitely watch Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, and The Thing.

Agree with all the choices, but I want to add Prince of Darkness.

rw2516 03-10-06 11:53 AM

Don't forget the original Assault on Precint 13 .

That's a blast from the past. The fight scene with Keith David in vintage. Especially when they are giving each other pile drivers on the pavement, all because David Keith would not wear the 'special glasses'.

I never forget the ending of They Live! that woman is having sex with an alien.

That movie gave me nightmares! The pre-recorded messages they see in their dreams will forever haunt me. I consider it one of the scariest movie ever. Great film.

I liked Starman too.

Might as well re-name this The John Carpenter thread.

Every time I see an old person wearing those big black sunglasses that go over your regular glasses I have a flashback.

Paint me stupid, I never realized that Big Trouble in Little China was a John Carpenter film!

The fact that the title said John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China didn't give it away? :p

Hey, I respect anyone who has the balls to include their name in the title. Maybe it comes across as an ego thing, but John Carpenter is one of the few director's able to pull it off, IMHO.

John Carpenter's Halloween
John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness
John Carpenter's Escape From New York
John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13
John Carpenter's The Fog
John Carpenter's Christine
John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness
John Carpenter's The Thing
John Carpenter's They Live
John Carpenter's Vampires
John Carpenter's Starman
John Carpenter's Memoirs of an Invisible Man
John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China

Just read this thread like 10 minutes ago, and I'm listening to Headbanger's Ball in the background and a band/video comes on that's taking images DIRECTLY from this film. The band: 3
Song: Alien Angel

Decent sound to the band too...never heard of 'em before this.
