Are the Oscars entertaining?
 

Trying to decide if I should bother watching them tomorrow. I usually pass, but I was a bit mad that I didn't get to catch the musical numbers. Was last year just special, and normall they are dull, or is there some hidden entertainment in there. Jon Stewart is hosting, so I'm thinking it can't be that bad.

Well, the lead up and all the red carpet bs is typically boring as fuck. But if you have some emotional stake in the flicks or are generally interested in more than one film it's often worth watching.

This year with Jon Stewart hosting it should be worth watching for me.

It can be entertaining as long as you have the fast forward button close at hand.

You know, you can always turn it off if you find you're not enjoying yourself.

Generally they have entertainment value, but once in a while it's a bit like staring and a train wreck - mesemerizing in a sick sort of way. It's one of the only awards shows I watch (the others are the Independent Spirit Awards and the Tonys), especially to spot the <i>worst</i> dressed.

Me and my fiance always have a blast eyeing how horrible some look on the red carpet. She made me suffer during the pre-show one time when she had no interest in any of the movies - just so she'd watch it with me. After that, we've made it a tradition and have fun with it. I've watched the Oscars every year since '98.

Also, I always have some vested interest in all the categories - just so certain individuals receive the recognition that they deserve *coughcough Paul Giamatti coughcough* Also, I always enjoy pushing for the unexpected great actors/actresses/films to get awards. In the end, the politics always end up pissing me off ... but oh well. We still have fun with it. Decent host of flicks are nominated this year, as well. :)

I've never watched the oscars. Ever.

On the radio last night, they were talking about how the Oscars telecast is considered the Gay Super Bowl in terms of the large percentage of gays who tune in to watch the Oscars.

I haven't watched the Oscars in over a decade. The red carpet is pretty cool though to see what the babes like Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are wearing.

And Scarlett Johansson always looks smokin'. She's definitely aged well.

I watch every second of them every year. This year will be better because there are alot more films I'm rooting for. Plus, this year has a better group of movies represented.

i love the Oscars...(and im not gay...i dont think) my love scale varies though on the host Jon Stewart should be good....in the past its been up and down:

Chris Rock: so-so
Letterman: Actually very good (Uma Oprah rap aside)
Whoopi: Bad
Billy Crystal: good, but he gets a tiresome (the musical numbers get old real fast)
Johnny Carson: Great
who am i missing? didnt they have rotating hosts one time? anyway i still love the show...even if there are some boring moments

Funny, I always thought the Gay Super Bowl was THE SUPER BOWL.

Anyhow, I watch the Oscars every year. Probably because I'm a movie fanatic, have seen all the nominees every year and am always rooting for my favourites. They always provide a high level of entertainment, and as far as award shows go, they are the best. Not to mention that this year, with Jon Stewart hosting, I don't see how you can go wrong.

I only watch for the cleavage. I love film but I coudn't care less which films wins what. My superior knowledge and taste in film does not require validation. :p

I'm going to record it, and fast foward through all the boring stuff, and get right into the awards & performances.

I just watch it to see whos wearing what. My Parents normally just call me when they start announcing the big stuff

I usually watch them every year as there is something I want to see win or what not, but this year doesnt do much for me. That being said, Ill probably have it on in the background and keep an eye on it.

Steve Martin was the last terrific Oscar host, imo.

I watch the show every year but I might miss the whole hour of the arrivals and the first 30 mintues of the actual show which pisses me off. Will anybody be willing to record the whole hour of the arrivals and the whole 3 hours of the show for me on DVD? I will pay them back for the time and postage. Thanks!

I think the Oscars are pretty cool. I love movies, and even though the Oscars don't always reward the great movies, it's meant to be a celebration of the movie business. I suppose virtually every organization has some kind of awards, but to me it's cool seeing someone win for something I enjoy so much. Usually the less hearlded categories are the most interesting too.

The last time I watched it was the year "LOTR-Return of the King" took it all. Since then it's become to political and personal. I think Hollywood today is in it's own little world than the Hollywood of old. Half the actors of today wouldn't make it 40-50 years ago. That's probably why I like watching TCM and seeing real movies and real actors without the threat of some statement or agenda being shoved my way.

Don't get wrong there's some good stuff and acting like "Capote" and "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Walk The Line". But please, you think "Brokeback Mountain" was in the same league as LOTR, Star Wars and even Titantic by the way it's talked about. It's pretty clear how they want to shove it out in the front especially when you compare how "The Passion of the Christ" was treated. The Oscars are taking another nose dive and fall flat.

Are the Tony Awards even aired on TV nowadays? That's probably why the Oscars would be considered their Super Bowl.

Viewership would go up and the overall experience would improve....too much logic involved. Even though I'm not too keen on John Stewart...I'll take him over Billy Crystal any day.

Yes, they are boring. Not only that, they're pretentious and self-indulgent. The almost 4 hour run time is beyond ridiculous. The Oscar need to be no more than 2 hours long. They would be much better with a greatly reduced length, and a more streamlined show would garner better ratings. They also need to lighten up, and stop taking themselves so deadly seriously.

Every year they take measure to reduce the shows length, and every year it seemingly gets longer. I didn't watch last year, and I won't watch this year. But that's just me. I lost interest a long time ago.

Strangely enough, I'm not gay and I enjoy the Tony Awards much more than the Oscars. When I catch them that is.
