Could Don Knotts role in 'Mr Limpet' be seen as Non-Comedic?

I dont remember much of this movie but I was having a discussion with a coworker about it.

Is this movie considered a Comedy? Would you consider Don Knotts role comedic?

I don't think his role was comedic in the funny ha-ha sense. That was left for his comedic side-kicks... Crusty and his friend George.
