What movies would you change the plot/ending to make it better for you?

I know this would be solely based on your personal opinion, but I wish to hear what ending or plot of movies would you change?

It would be obvious that replies would include major spoilers.

Thanks!!!

I've been waiting for a thread like this.......War of the Worlds (2005). I really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so of the movie (basically until the end of the farmhouse segment). I thought it went downhill from there but I could have made peace with it if it weren't for the very last bit.....
Spoiler:
the part with the son being alive.
I haven't disliked the ending of a film that much in a long while, and it really undermined the entire experience for me.

The end of The Iron Giant. A beautiful and poignant sacrifice, kiddiefied with a "don't worry folks, he's okay!" ending.

I usually stop the movie early.

I'd make the ending of The Natural like the book.

I'll go with War of the Worlds, too.
Spoiler:
Not just the son being alive, but the entire abrupt disposal of these seemingly indestructable machines.
Oh, and Signs.
Spoiler:
The whole, "oh look the aliens are killed by water" revelation was a joke. Our atmosphere is made up partially of water, yet they romped around without any sort of protective suits on. Just illogical. Not to mention, they're these highly intelligent, super strong beings...and they couldn't break through that fucking basement door near the end of the film? The last act of that movie was laughable.

Edit: Oops, typo. See if you can spot it in the quoted response.

Kiddiefied? Who was the target audience again?

Almost anything done by David Fincher. GREAT films, but the endings always seem to be a pfffft-letdown.

Sorry to nitpick your points.

War of the worlds:
Spoiler:
They beat the machines because the aliens driving them died. It had nothing to do with anything the humans did. It was bacteria on Earth they had no immunity for. I think this is in the book.

Signs:
I agree with you on the
Spoiler:
water thing
, but I don't recall the movie ever saying they were
Spoiler:
super strong.

Appreciate all your thoughts but I was kind of hoping that aside from constructively criticizing the plot or ending, you could provide your own take or opinion as to what should've have happened next or what would be a better option in ending the film.

Couldn't think of another word, but I think children could have handled a sadder ending.

I know. I just felt it was too abrupt and it wasn't very well explored. I don't mind the explanation, in fact I kind of like it. I just wish they wouldn't have been like "FIGHT FIGHT BOOM BOOM ARRGGHTTTHDHFDSFJ Oh...they're dead. Cool let's go home." I just wish they would've beefed it up a little. Expanded a bit more, instead of having everything end in the blink of an eye.

Spoiler:
They could jump from the ground to a rooftop...but they couldn't kick in a wooden door. That just doesn't add up in my mind.

For Signs, I never found the ending bothersome. Night spent a lot of time explaining why things were as they were, and really they left for the same reasons in WotW...not because we necessarily beat them, but because of their own misunderstanding of the environment.

Spoiler:
Though people always harp on the water, but am I the only one that saw it was clearly made out that it wasn't the water alone that killed them? From the movie having the little girl say there's something weird about the water, to the news saying people in the middle east figured out a way to kill them (and never saying just dump water on them). Seemed to me it was clear that water itself wasn't what killed the aliens...he sure did put enough hints in there to suggest so at least...

As for what ending I would change, Minority Report. Solid film, but that ending just saps it up way too much, Anderton's character always annoyed me as a particularly selfish man who is redeemed as good in the end...but never really does much to deserve that redemption. There are theories of alternate readings of the ending, but I don't think that was the intention...it doesn't really work. Plus the ending postscript the script had definately should've been on the film.

I would have to go with The Hulk. I can suspend disbelief as much as anyone but the last 10 minutes of that movie was just too much.

I'll try to tie two threads together for this: American X History...

Spoiler:
the ending didnt work for me...i understand the need for a downer ending and all that but it seemed like a whole 3rd act was cut...Norton was just about to try to infiltrate the skinhead group again...then boom, end. I mean its a very good 2/3 of a movie but....my ending...Norton does infiltrate the skinheads and things go horrbily wrong, final confrontation with Stacy Keach, he's about to get executed, he manages to escape certain doom when his girlfriend has a change of heart (she couldnt be that bad) this happens at the same time his brother gets shot he finds out about it and we have the final scene....ok, i havent exactly worked out the kinks yet. But at least theres some closure...
And ditto on War of the Worlds....a rollercoaster of a ride that ends with a dud

In that case.

War of the Worlds
Spoiler:
leave the son, believed to be dead...dead.

That was my only gripe about the ending.

But seriously, the only one that comes to mind for me is:

The Truman Show
The whole movie is about Truman, yet the last shot of the film is of the female love interest? Typical, "we can't leave the audience to make up their own mind" mentality. They had the perfect ending 30 seconds prior and ruined it. Should have ended with:
Spoiler:
Truman leaving the dome - Smiling, waving and saying his trademark phrase. Walk through the door. End credits.

"The Descent" for me. I am not sure exactly how best to end it, but I do know that closing sequence wasn't it. The movie scared the hell out of me and I loved it, but that ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm sure I'll add more.

Ladder 49 - I would remove that crappy song they play during the ending. That song doesn't fit at all.

Cabin Fever.
Spoiler:
I would've had the guy who went out with the 12 pack to get drunk to have been the only survivor. That way the message would've been "If you drink, you will live"!

Serenity:

Spoiler:
I'd remove Mal saying "What was that?" I understand it's sort of funny and a repeat of what he said the first time the movie shows Serenity and its crew. However, I feel the scenes and music right before that are beautiful, and would rather the movie not ended on a joke-y note.

No mention of Shawshank yet? I know I would like to have seen the movie end with Red on the bus and a simple voiceover.

Tony & Maria, together.
Of course, that would mess up the whole movie but I could fill an Olympic swimming pool with all the tears I've shed over that.

Star Wars prequels. Kill TPM, tell some of that plot in flash backs in the first movie which basically covers up through AOTC, and spend the last two movies on doing a more detailed job on Anakins fall to the dark side.

Kubrick's "The Shining":

Spoiler:
There was just this incredible build-up to the climax, you had that sequence where Jack starts chasing the kid through the maze in the snow with the axe. Then ... he just gets tired, sits down, and freezes to death. I like the way the book ended better (Jack's about to kill Danny, Danny reminds him of the boiler that explodes if not tended to, Jack regains his senses enough not to kill Danny and go to the boiler, Danny and his mom escape while the hotel blows up). The miniseries did this, but the filmmaking was nowhere near the level of Kubrick. And they tacked on this stupid happy ending with ghost Jack happy at Danny's graduation. Man, that sucked.
