Avoid Black and White or Foreign Films ?
 

I'm curious to know who avoids movies that are foreign or that are black and white? I have a few friends who do and IMHO they miss out on some great cinema.

Some of the best movies are B/W and Foreign. My brother, who hates to read subtitles, will still buy a highly rated foreign film. I know plenty of people who don't know who the BBC is let alone watch a foreign movie. I don't understand a B/W thing. I remember what it was like before color TV. :)

I simply don't understand this at all.

I might have some friends like this. I just don't talk to them about movies. If they don't have any interest then I doubt they'd enjoy if they watched them.

I have a few friends like this too, though I'm slowly converting one.

Depends on the subjects. If it's about hookers, I'm not interested.

I have a friend like this who keeps telling me(to appear 'cool' and 'open minded') how he can 'handle' subtitles and says "I saw and liked The Passion didn't I?".

But even that film he asked "Will it be dubbed in English on dvd?" and still hasn't picked up the dvd despite 'wanting to'.

I studiously avoid older, black & white, and foreign films.

But I always was a terrible student. ;)

Never understood this either. I get tired of formula and often a foreign movie will break that up (but not always of course).

Hell, I often watch movies in english with the subtitles.

This thread reminds me of that great Bud light commercial that asked: "Why are foreign fims so....foreign?"

I have meet people like this. I've even met a few who won't watch a movie if it's an English language film but the actors have accents.

This is why there's a market for full screen DVD's and Rob Schneider movies.

I lived with 2 people like this. One wouldnt watch B&W movies nor foreign unless they were dubbed and had kung fu in them. The other wouldnt watch foreign.

I was faced with 2 options:

1. Slaughter them in their sleep, bury them in my basement and cover their bodies in Lime.

2. Simply move out once I had the chance

Since I didnt have any Lime I moved out.

Only morons do this.

I don't mind B&W but I'm not a big fan of subtitles. It is getting to be less and less of an issue as I am finding that I am watching more and more foreign films. I think if I can get into the film I don't notice it as much but it seems to be more obvious if I am not liking the film.

I woke up monday to find myself in some smoke-filled, backalley cinema in Paris watching a Hungarian/Czech b&w film with french subtitles with absolutely no idea how I got there. And how did a can of Spam and CheezeWhiz get in my pocket? No more Superbowl parties for me!

My girlfriend doesn't like to see movies with subtitles because she says she doesn't feel like reading for two hours. That I can understand and I am willing to put up with a dub if necessary. I don't avoid B&W or foreign films but find that I need to be in the right mood to see them.

My brother absolutely refuses to watch anything thats in black and white or has subtitles. I really don't understand what the big deal is with black and white. Subtitles I can kind of understand, as I'm not always in the mood to read during a movie. But to flat out not watch them ever, makes no sense.

I know a lot of people like this (especially the ones who avoid foreign films) and it's pretty sad.

In fact, I know someone who considers himself a film buff (or cinephile) but won't watch foreign films. How someone can call themselves that and only watch English-language films is totally laugable.

Sad...really?

It's just not some people's cup of tea. I know people who won't watch foreign, indie, or B&W (older) flicks, but I don't relegate them to knuckle dragging troglodyte whom have no right to share the same air as me.

It's sad because they won't give it a chance.

When you say "not some people's cup of tea"... are you referring to reading subtitles or the actual foreign films themselves?
