Pulse.....New Horror movie
 

Saw the preview of this last night during Veronica Mars and upon further reasearch found out that it is a remake of a Japanese movie ala The Ring.
Looks good and it stars Kristen Bell and Ian Sommerhalder.
Anyone read or heard anything about this? I belive it opens in March.

I saw the original last year and didn't like it at all. Similar to The Grudge...a lot of the horror elements just didn't seem to translate well to American audiences. So I'm iffy about the remake.

The Japanese original is one of my favorite asian films and my favorite J-Horror. There was nothing present in it to try and make you jump, though a certain disappearing act tended to creep me out. That said, it isn't so much a horror flick as one of those wacko examinations on how technology is tearing us apart, just with excellent atmosphere carrying throughout.

From what I hear, the remake is a loose adaptation. Which may make it have broader appeal, hopefully the atmosphere is intact, as that was the original's strongest point - an unending sense of impending doom. The trailer of the remake seems similar with more stilted dialogue. Hell, I think the plane at the end is the same CG one from the original.

Hmmm, I did a search before starting the thread and nothing came up. Oh well.

I saw it recently when it made the rounds at the art-house theaters. The movie drags a bit, but there are some genuinely creepy elements and the at the end, all hell breaks loose. Some of the imagary has stuck with me for a while and I keep thinking about the implications of what was going on. I'm going to pick up the Japanese version and might see the American remake depending on the reviews.

I've seen a fair share of J-horror films and own a few, and the original Pulse left more of long lasting impression over most of the others. It plays on one's mood and can be downright creepy at times. But the biggest thing aside from some of the visuals, is the premise of the film which gets you thinking.

I'm not a fan of remakes, but I might check this one out. The original Pulse has a notoriously well editted "drop" scene that is very realistic. Though, I wouldn't want to get to much into it than that ..

I love the original. The atmospheric scare tactics are very well done. The creep factor goes up bigtime. With that said, I'm not going to see the remake....it will just degrade my memory of the original.

It was only after thinking about it for a while, and watching it a second time that the original finally grabbed me. One of the few "thinking man's" horror movies - though the remake may lose sight of the very qualities that makes this movie unique.

Shame the remake trailer gives away all the money shots of the original.

I am a huge Asian horror fan and I have immersed myself in many of its offerings and I must say, though Pulse (AKA Kairo) may not be one of the scariest asian horror films, it definitely is one of the best. The film stuck with me much longer than any other film I have seen with its meditations on existence and purpose of life. The film ultimately caused me to reflect upon my own life... any film that can provoke emotions and intellectual stimulation within a person should not be ignored.

I think it looks really.. well, I won't say it because different opinions aren't appreciated much in these forums.

But.. I'll wait for the movie about the haunted TiVo..

i saw the original and it was indeed pretty creepy. asians work more on setting a very creepyy atmosphere rather than just making you juump with "boo" type scares like US horror. on that note, this was done very well, like the grudge. i will admit i was slightly confused with the ending and will need to watch it again.

Well - this was one of my early favs years ago... hollywood will either try too hard and fuck it up worse, or they'll fix the little flaws from the original and make it better. It was a decent premise, but the execution was what made it work... overall the original was confusing and chilling. This looks like they dropped the muted quiet tone of the characters and the setting and made the ones that went away more of a character than they should be. I'm interested to see how it turns out though.

If its one thing Ive loved about japanese horror films is that , to me, they scare you like nothing else, now if only they could end one decently, at times it seems like its all about the premise and individual frights.

I thought the previews looked pretty good. Finding out that it's a remake prompted me to add it to my Netflix queue. I'll find out then if I'm going to see the new on in the theater or not.

Im not a big fan of the asian horro remakes, and to be honest the Asian horror movies can be really good or down right awful, and I havent seen the original yet. I do have to say Im a little biased because of Kristen Bell, but oh well. Cant be worse than most horror movies put out now so I will give it a go.

For this reason alone, it will be much, much better than the original ;)

The film was pushed back from March 3rd to a mid-July release date.

Anything to get Christina to wear LESS clothing at the premiere :up:
