whats the joke surrounding Brokeback mountain?

hello, the wife and i have little knowledge of this movie, yet see it being the butt of many jokes (even TNA wrestling made a poke at it) whats the problem or punchline to this film that would help us to understand what the hell is so funny about this one?

Not to mention that a few years ago, South Park made a joke where Cartman said all Independent movies were about gay cowboys eating pudding. It's just kind of funny to actually see one.

I seem to remember the word Texas and the phrase Steers and queers...

This one seems to be about a Texan and another cowboy and lots of Sheep.

I just find the title completely ludicrious. "Brokeback Mountain" sounds pretty damn close to what the all out porn title might be...like maybe "Broken Back Mounting." I guess the cowboys broke their backs while mounting each other.

I am waiting for the sequel, "Sore Ass Valley."

Odd, the one more common is "Bareback Mountain" Well, the basic idea is there. It's about Gay cowboys. Simple as that.

The joke's on the audience for spending their $8 dollars on the movie.

Seriously, I just watched this the other day and found both characters completely unlikeable and the film to be an utter bore.

I suppose it's how one defines "pudding".

okay, i tought perhaps it was a Gigli type thing where the movie just blows, turn out here the actors do to. readin that comic-strip reminded me of something, few years back a friend of mine called me up wanting to hang out, we may've just been outta high school, he didnt know what the movie was about, but knew it had Robin Williams in it. when he told me the name, i respectfully declined, he wanted to see a lil something called Birdcage with me. when i explained the premise of the movie, he too didnt wanna go. damn big mistake that couldve been

I haven't seen the movie, so my opinion is based only on the trailers and clips I have seen here and there. To me, it looks horribly cliched to the point of comedy. I have a theory that many peope don't want to admit how stupid much of it sounds, dialogue and all, for fear of being labeled anti-gay, and whatever else. The line "I wish I knew how to quit you!" cracks me up every time I hear it. Not only because of just the line itself, the words, but the delivery of it just sounds like something out of SNL, or some other comedy flick or show.

I'd think the same thing if it was in a film about a straight couple. To me, it's just flat out funny.

That line is every bit as horrible as "I'm the king of the world!, etc... if you ask me.

There was "puddin'" in the movie, it was just implied, like the gay theme should have been. Wouldn't it have been a much more enjoyable movie to watch if it was only implied throughout the movie, then people all across the country could argue and debate if it was a buddy movie or a gay love story.

I thought the same thing before I saw the movie. The line is WAY out of context in the trailer, it doesn't really make sense.

It really is a good movie. Unfortunatley, many people can't see past the fact that it's two guys. (Same goes for the Birdcage, which is friggin HILARIOUS)

I would assume so given what they put their families thru. Not exactly the "beautiful love story" they'd like us to believe eh?

I like Savage's title - "Bareback Mounting"

Agreed. That line of dialogue in context with the scene, it is not funny at all.

It's front runner for the Best Picture oscar, and is about two gay cowboys. That makes it fodder for numerous things, from speculation of propoganda, to making gay jokes appropriate.

Most of the jokes consist of the typical gay-joke cheap shot "Narnia in first, Kong in second, and Brokeback Mountain takes it up the rear at number 10." But I'm easily amused by them
