Tarantino on Psycho and Hitchcock
 

This a piece I found on a website written by a person who was at Tarantino's Horror Movie fest or something of that sort....

"The first movie of the night was Psycho II, starring Anthony Perkins, but not directed by Hitchcock. Periodically, in the past, Quentin has dropped some controversial movie opinions. I think it was QT5 that he said he preferred Bruce Li (in the Bruceploitation films) to the actual Bruce Lee. Last night had Quentin reminding the audience what he thought of Hitchcock. He started off by saying that he thought Psycho II was the best performance of Perkins’ career. “I like Psycho II better than Psycho” he continued, and went on to say that in fact he liked every remake of Psycho, including the Gus Van Sant version, better than the original Psycho, that he didn’t like the original Psycho that much at all, or any of Hitchcock’s work, for that matter. In fact, he said he liked all Hitchcock-esque films — except those by Truffaut — better than Hitchcock. Touché.

Quentin picked Psycho II to kick off the fest because of the director Richard Franklin, whose work, especially Road Games and Patrick, Quentin especially admires."


All I can say is...........What the F@$# ! I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all but, What the F@$# !

Having seen Psycho and all of QT's films, I can see why he probably wouldn't like it; the pace is quite slow for a simple psychological murder mystery, at least compared to what QT apparently prefers.

He has used many shots and scenes from Hitchcock films in his films especially Psycho being one of the most evident in Pulp Fiction.

As long as he stays a film director and not a film critic I'm ok with his opinions.

A link would be nice, so we aren't wasting our time commenting on third-jand information from a source we don't even know.

I liked Psycho II but it's not in my top 100. Psycho is my top 25 or better. QT has a film or two in there too.

I respect "Psycho" for what it is, its simplicity and all, but I tend to think it's overpraised in comparison to films like "Strangers on a Train"", which doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

He was a critic way before he was a film director.

Everybody's a critic.

isnt the Vince remake of Psycho, the exact same film AS the original Psycho? i thought it was shot for shot...at least thats what i remembered from the press (i never compared the two) Psycho 2 was actually not bad but...come on.

If "works in a video store" = "critic" then you would be correct.

As I recall it was damn close but there were a few small changes. There's a shot of Vaughn looking through the peep hole and it's quite obvious that he's wacking off.

I'm not saying he was a film critic by profession. I was saying he is a critic by nature. I assumed what I meant by "critic" would be obvious given that most people know about Tarantino's highly opinionated views on films that he's had most of his life.

So he's not a big fan of Hitchcock, big deal... Note that he keeps saying "like" which is clearly not the same as "good" or "bad". It's not like he said that Hitchcock was a hack that made poor films. One doesn't have to "like" every acclaimed film/director out there.

I wouldn't use the term "critic" here... in my view he's more a paradigm of a "film geek", who, like critics, are opinionated, but are not so much analytical as they are passionate and prone to trivia. Typically this includes having very high enthusiasm for genre films and "cool cinema" over more "highbrow" films. A good example would be Tarantino's love of exploitation films.

Fair enough. I can agree with that.

QT was on Leno one night and said the same exact thing that was posted here,he also said Devils Rejects was one of the best Horror flicks of all time.

i like QT better when hes directing...(and not acting either)

I love psycho 2....

not as much as the original though...

oh and I'm not as famous as QT, so who cares...

I think it's great too. III has some wonderful moments as well.

Quentin does not admire Truffaut's hitchcockian "The Bride Wore Black"? I find that very, very hard to swallow.
