Soem films I saw recently over Xmas....
My thoughts on:
Spider-Man 2 - 4.5/5
Fantastic.
Surprisingly for a PG rated (UK) film, this had a significantly darker tone than the first film in the series, with at least as much violence, where Peter questions his identity, and shows that he's not without capcity for getting things wrong (getting fired, always being late, standing MJ up), so He diecides to give up being Spider-Man.
It reminded me of the excellent Sins of the Fathers cartoon episode, where he decides he won't be Spidey anymore, but then he meets a little girl and he tells her how he became Spider-Man. (Aunt May says in the movie "Every child needs a hero").
There are some nice comic touches though, like the Japanese woman playing the Spider-Man theme on the violin
Doc Ock makes an excellent villain. Is he only "evil" through a malfunction with his robot arms??
Also for any fans of Kirsten Dunst, there's a great scene near the end of the movie similar to the wet dress scene in Film 1, but I won't spoil it for you!
The Fourth Man (1983) - 3.5/5
Paul Verhoeven's last Dutch movie is an intriguing watch It has a very interesting story and could well be seen as a trial run for Basic Instinct, since it features an ice-cold seductress (Renee Soutendijk) with mysterious motivations and sexual preferences. The hallucinatory tale follows a novelist (Jeroen Krabbé) first falling for her, and then feverishly investigating whether she's a serial husband killer. The film is full of what would soon be recognised as Verhoeven trademarks: a little blasphemy, a lot of nudity, dispassionate characters and hidden agendas.
Good movie.
Shrek - 4/5
Great spin on traditional fairy tale movies.
"In the mornin', I'm mak'n WAFFLES!"
Toy Story 2 - 4.5/5
Surprisingly moving for a kids' animated film (but also very funny).
Spider-Man 2 - 4.5/5
