Lousy previews for good movies.
I just remembered that when I saw the preview in the theater for the movie Children of a Lesser God (1986), many people started to laugh at it, and this being a serious drama. Showed how a preview can go wrong for a movie that was eventually critically acclaimed. Anyone else remember previews that went bad for movies that turned out good?

Fight Club. I never wanted to see this due to the trailers, then I got the DVD as a gift and gave it a chance and was blown away. I was instantly pissed that it had such a crappy trailer that made me wait so long to see it.

I had no earthly desire to see this based on the previews. I went on a lark because I thought it might be fun in a cheesey kinda way. One of the best movies I have ever seen.

I avoided The Shawshank Redemption like the plague after I saw the first trailer. I made it look like some sort of pretentious soul searching experience.
I finally caught it on video when it was released and loved it.
Considering it didn't have very good box office success, and has had great home video and cable success, I'm guessing many people felt the same way as I did.

Funny thing is the 'Internet Trailers' on the DVD set are 1000x better than the official trailers I saw and would have gotten me into the theater.

I thought the trailer for The Godfather, the one included on the 5th disc of the boxed set, was pretty piss poor. It pretty much shows the entire f---ing movie in a series of still images.

I can't remember if it was a teaser or trailer, but for Braveheart it looked like a chick flick so bad that my wife dragged me to the movies. Twenty minutes later there was utter violence for two more hours.

I thought the trailers for 28 Days Later and Super Troopers poorly portrayed the movies. The trailer for 28 Days Later made it look like a zombie horror flick, and the trailer for Super Troopers made it look like another Police Academy movie. Both movies were far, far better than they way they were being marketed.

One of the Braveheart trailers used the score from Speed. Synthesizer music really doesn't go well with period pieces.

The Office Space trailer gave the entire movie away!

The Dark Water remake trailer. I actually thought the movie was gonna be scary... HA!
This is exactly the opposite of good movie bad trailer, but does anyone remember the first preview for Star Wars Episode I? You know, the one where we saw snippets of the movie but we didn't hear the dialogue... there was a reason for that, lol!
Has anyone seen the teaser trailer for Lady in the Water? The movie looked absolutely pathetic (even though it stars Paul Giamatti). Then the words "A Bedtime story... written and directed by M. Night Shymylan" came on the screen and I got chills and my thoughts did a complete 180 and "Wow, that was creepy as hell." went through my head. In fact, I had to turn the lights on just now as I'm thinking about it. The reasons I'm adding this to this post is because the trailer is so eerie (moreso the more you ponder on it) and with his name attached it just seems like it will be some psychological movie - but as far as I can tell it is going to be the least spooky of all his films.
