The one that sticks out the most is "The Cell"

Wow, just wow.

sixerb 12-24-05 07:54 AM

he seems to contradict himself.... ET is #3 in the year it comes out, but #3 for the 80's?
pulp fiction #3 in it's year coming out, but #2 in the 90's?

I'd hardly call that contradiction ... the effects of art on any one person change over time.

I love DVDTalker marty888's sig for this:

"The movie never changes - it can't change - but every time you see it, it seems different because you're different - you see different things." - James Cole

Reading this guy's lists just reminds me how much I miss Gene Siskel. I essentially can count on Roger Ebert's reviews by assuming the exact opposite of what he thinks. The amount of amazing movies he has dissed is staggering. Him ranking "The Cell" as a best of the year movie is not surprising, considering who it's coming from.

mllefoo 12-24-05 10:40 AM

I really hate his lackey now. That guy agrees with everything Roger says, to the point of fawning all over him like a sex kitten to Hugh Hefner.

Gene had balls. Everytime Gene and Roger had a disagreement over some movie, Gene would always claim, "Yeah, but you wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." in a "So what do YOU know" voice.

Al_Tahoe 12-24-05 12:00 PM

He didn't include The Sting in 1973, or Godfather, Part II in 1974. :wtf: After that, the list lost any credibility to me.

purple rain... that's funny.

Sunday Morning 12-24-05 03:50 PM

a walk in the clouds...1995...even more funny.

He only gave Godfather Part II three stars.

ChrisKnudsen 12-24-05 04:50 PM

Yeah, also Gene Siskel gave Babe: Pig in the City movie of the year in Gene's final top 10. I blame it on his tumor, though.

You must not watch the show. They argue all the time.

The Cell sucked? I paid too close attention to JLo's butt.

Babe: Pig in the City is a great film. Have you even seen it?

Rizor 12-24-05 08:39 PM

The key to Ebert is that he's all for the eye candy, which may explain his love of the Cell. Heck, if you read his positive review for the Phantom of the Opera remake, he seems to say the movie's terrible but recommends it for the production design.

Khan 12-25-05 07:58 AM

Not many foreign movies in there, although i'm very pleasantly surprised to see Monsieur Hire at #2 in 1990, 2nd only to Goodfellas. I love it too and am astonished we still can't buy it on dvd.

Jason 12-25-05 08:15 AM

Minority Report as #1 in 2002?

dcswirl 12-25-05 10:24 AM

Purple Rain -screwy-

I stopped watching after the first five shows. It was revolting.

wastro 12-25-05 11:30 AM

No Shawshank Redemption at all. :thmbsdwn:

chente 12-25-05 11:33 AM

He seems to really like Herzog. Me too.

Tracer Bullet 12-25-05 01:29 PM

Ah, I love the fashionable Ebert-bashing. It all boils down to "he doesn't like what I like!"

Mr. Cinema 12-25-05 06:46 PM

I'd hate to see what you guys would say about other critics' top 10 lists...especially from assclowns like Joel Siegel. His lists are like anyone elses. He doesn't make them to please you.
