I really like Clash By Night - plus you get film noir and Fritz Lang in one!
Also another vote for Testament of Dr. Mabuse. Lang was amazing, pure and simple.

Thanks to all those who replied. I ended up getting Annie Hall and Fury. He loved both. I'd never seen either and watched them a couple of months ago. I felt Annie Hall was fun and I'm glad I watched it. I'm not sure I love it, but it was enjoyable.
Fury, on the other hand, was a homerun. I absolutely love this movie and I'd heartily recommend it to all. Fantastic acting! It was amazing to watch this upbeat, happy situation turn very ugly, and very disturbing. Just a spectacular movie!
