What happened to Mike Judge's Idiocracy?

feels like its been six months since I heard this movie was in the can and ready for release. so where is it?

im not expecting this to be some amazingly awesome movie, and im not going to assume this movie will somehow be as funny as Office Space. But id like to see the darn thing.

frankly, ive always had the theory that if the average person could articulate themselves well enough, they would have enough material from mundane life experience to come up with an incredibly funny movie.

even back as a high school student I could at least sense some hidden meaning in a show like Beavis and Butthead, which was naturally accused of being crude, shallow, and without merit or substance. To me anyways, Mike Judge was saying "kids today are just about this stupid". Obviously B&B are caricatures wildly exaggerated for the sake of comedy. But everytime I happen to walk past a couple teenagers talking nowadays, I feel like ive moved one step closer to that reality.

thats what I feel Judge is/was aiming for with Idiocracy... a look into the direction people in this country are heading into. and release the movie already!

oh and make sure its rated R!

Poor test screenings... Judge's rethinking the film... Fox not knowing what to do with it...

Take your pick.

Which probably means it's actually good. Can't shake up that status quo now!

Test screenings are the biggest bullshit in the world. Just give the audience the camera and tell them to shoot their own fucking movie.

I'm all with you thinking that most test audiences are a bunch of assholes, but even fans of Judge's past work who have seen early cuts of the film have claimed this film is a stinking piece of shit. That's not good.

I still think Judge's only good work has been Office Space, but that's just me.

giving this thread a necrobump to pass along a small but tantalizing tidbit... for what its worth (admittedly not a ton) the local uberplex theatre has an Idiocracy poster in the main lobby now so perhaps there is some possibility of a release this year...

a couple websites are predicting a September 1st release

I think it was the new Giant had an article with him, and he discussed the movie. Either Giant or Stuff/Maxim/Blender/FHM (one of those, they're all the same).

This opens friday. Is anyone going to see it ? There's quite a few places near me showing it.

I haven't seen an ad, trailer or tv spot for it.

It's listed as ' Untitled Mike Judge Comedy ' on moviefone.

Are they just putting it out there and seeing what happens ?

Yes, because all movies released without publicity must suck. That makes total sense.

For a major studio release? That's a hell yes, hands down.

Let's think of it like this:

1. The film has been delayed for almost two years.

2. The test screenings have been a train wreck and a half with Judge's own fans hating the film.

3. The studio is pretty much sweeping it under the rug as they release it with no publicity.

My money is on that it SUCKS. Christ, even Supernova got some publicity.

I know Equilibrium has a lot of fans, and that was dumped with no publicity.

eXistenZ, a David Cronenberg film with a big budget was dumped in US theaters. I think it's a great film.

And I think we all remember a little film called "Episode III", about a bunch of people in outer space.

Equiliribium and eXlistenZ were both released my Miramax. Regular rules don't apply when dealing with Miramax (and or any other company the Weinsteins touch).

That was supposed to be a hidden meaning? Yes it was such a deep show and not as vapid as it appeared.

What about 3000 (Luke Wilson wakes up in the future where everyone is stupid)? That sounded promising.

3000 = Idiocracy. Changing titles - another good sign of a dud.

It was actually called "3001".

I don't think it takes a brain surgeon to tell you that this movie probably won't do well, whether it's good or not.
