Wow... no matter how you cut it, the fact that a two-week old Narnia overtook the fresh Kong is not good news for Universal. Also rather disappointing numbers for Cheaper 2, even for a weekday. The first one didn't gross that low until its 12th day.

Will Brokeback impress again in week three, or will the more-agressive rollout mean a dillution of its numbers and enthusiasm?

I think it is going to make a killing this weekend. BOM says 120 screens and if its per screen average was like last week, then this will make 4.3 million dollars over the weekend (not including the Christmas bump which could land it to 4.5).

This weekend should be interesting....we could see one of three movies - Narnia, Kong, Dick & Jane - each one a week older than the older taking the number one spot. It'd be quite a thing if they came in from oldest to newest.

I can't believe Narnia overtook Kong. Then again, I thought it was the better movie of the two... still though, this has GOT to be smacking Universal straight in the grundies.

Glad to see Harry Potter is still pulling somewhat strongly. Where the hell are my cigarettes? FUCK!

Universal should have had test screenings and at those test screenings the audiance would have said "cut an hour off this movie"! And there's plenty to cut from.

For those scoring at home, King Kong has now grossed $202 million worldwide in 8 days. According to box office mojo, Universal is on vacation and Thursday's numbers weren't available. So that total is a tad higher.

Was wondering why the numbers weren't available for Kong today...

Looks Brokeback is going to be playing at 217 screens (more than the 120 or so that was it going to be). If it averages 25,000 per screen, it is going to make 5.4 million dollars bringing its total to 10 million and pretty much the budget of the movie that has only been released limited for 3 weeks. Awesome.

Looks like the Producers is opening on less screens than thought at 975. Now, that looks doomed.

C'mon, we'll be hearing this every wk of the film's theatrical run no doubt. The movie cost 14mill, plus let's say another 10 for marketing...and cut the gross in half for the studio's net take.

When the film reaches 45mill or so you can start shouting it from the rooftops.

I would have only cut about 20 minutes - but I have a feeling that my cut of the movie would have been an improvement, and at 2 hours 40 minutes or so it would have played to larger crowds.

I still like King Kong a lot, it's just not quite as good as it could have been. A minor tweak in the script here and there, and tighter editing would have made this one a great movie rather than just a very good one.

I agree it would've made a more commercially digestible movie but I don't personally think it would make a better movie.

The per screen average for this film is notorious and is worth noting. This excites me more than Kong bombing and reading about it every single god damn day and having it spread through 24 threads. Also, I know how much the movie costs and whatever marketing is but this is still the bloody 3rd week of limited release. Those numbers are a killing. This is a year for crap movies and this is the last one that I am excited about (all others disappointed pretty hardcore).

(edited because I end up counting 4 threads of people excusing why King Kong isn't do so well, its like they made the movie or something).
