SPR omaha is the most jaw dropping scene ive seen, how it could miss the list is a joke.
Others mentioned that should be highly considered are from braveheart (once again, almost no excuse), wild bunch and glory.
Another i havent seen mentioned, but since its from my favorite movie is from Last of the mohicans (daniel day lewis, stowe version). The ambush scene rocked.

If you're talkin' fantasy battles, Kong vs. the dinosaurs, Jason vs. the skeleton army, or Uma Thurmon & her sword vs. 4,000 ninja were all pretty visually arresting (although the Kill Bill scene was truly overkill...in all senses of the word).
For 'realistic' battle scenes, Hamburger Hill, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Thin Red Line, & Tae Guk Gi all feature some pretty raw, unnerving combat. And the 'Agincourt' battle scene in Ken Branagh's version of Henry V really gives an idea of how desperate and frightening the battles must have been during the Middle Ages.

Thin Red Line had some great battles and some beautiful photography. SPR's opener still is the best IMO.
This will probably not get mentioned, but I liked the fight between Hector and Achilles in "Troy". It wasn't a big battle, but I liked the fighting and the music during that scene.

alexander's first battle has epic written all over it.
(and this is where CG is a bad thing. the battle was at once enormous and ridiculous. i had no idea what was going on, his flanking-type plan seemed terrible. too much dust.)

Someone actually disapproved with the Battle of Hoth in ESB? Wow. That isn't just the greatest SW battle, it's right up with any "realistic" battle, the way it was constructed was epic.
Gladiator had the greatest swords battle, just grit and blood, still untopped in that field. No CGI nonsense.

CGI-free:
The first assault on Troy in "Helen of Troy" (Robert Wise, 1955)
The main battle of Rome against Carthage in "Scipio Africanus" (Carmine Gallone, 1937-39 - elephants were sacrificed for this shoot)
All the battles in "War and Peace" (King Vidor, 1956 - that footage is still used today in every single mini-series about Napoleon or the Russian campaign, sometimes uncredited)
CGI-reliant:
All the battles in "Kung Fu Hustle"
