Woody Allen is mediocre and makes miserable films: Woody Allen

I'll admit I may have made much too sweeping a statement there, one that deserved to be challenged and one that might not bear up if I sat down and re-watched all the Allen, Wilder and Sturges films in question. Let's just say that at this stage of my life, I tend to prefer even mid-range Wilder and Sturges to top-drawer Allen.

Hooray for pointless resurrected threads!
I've only seen one Allen film, and that was Annie Hall. We watched it in my Intro to Film class. I didn't care for it. We were sampling a taste of director's and if that's considered to be one of his best films I don't care to watch anything else he's put out.

I'm sure another Underworld movie will be coming out in a year or two...

One film that hasn't been mentioned here, and is often overlooked, is Play It Again, Sam. Although Herbert Ross directed it, Woody wrote it (it was based on a play of his) and starred in it alongside his '70s stalwarts Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts. For all intents and purposes, it's a Woody Allen movie, and one of his funniest. If you didn't know that Woody's biggest influence was Groucho Marx, you'd sure know it by the end of this one. His physical comedy is amazing here.

Play It Again, Sam is a classic. I love his date with the nymphomaniac.
And anyone who can get Groucho Marx to say this certainly has something going for him:
"They say Allen got something from the Marx Brothers. He got nothing. Maybe twenty years ago, he might have been inspired. Today he's an original. The best, the funniest."

You gotta get the stick out of your behind. You come across as a pompous ass in most of your posts (which I'm sure you're aware and proud of), but don't preach to me and read in to my opinion in saying they're the same in "tone and tenor". I never said that. I said if, meaning they may or may not be. If someone is going to compare some modern masterpiece of his to that then I wouldn't want to watch it.

Because I didn't care for one Woodie Allen film all of a sudden my taste in movies is compared to liking Underworld? Yeah, okay.

I don't care what Woody says, I love his films. Even the lesser ones are enjoyable (most of the time). I'm looking forward to move being released on Blu.

Annie Hall was not entertaining to me. I'm entitled to my opinion. I never said his other movies were like that, but if (notice I said if?), then I wouldn't be interested.

You have only seen ONE of his films!
Plus, if you can't even get the guy's name right why say anything?

I see in another thread that Dan Aykroyd is one of your favorite actors...you might want to check out Curse of the Jade Scorpion and fast forward to his parts.

If the guy didn't like Annie Hall I would NOT recommend seeing Curse of the Jade Scorpion as his next Woody Allen film.
