Any got last night's Box Office numbers?
 

Am anxious to see what King Kong's haul was last night and i know boxofficemojo won't be updated until later today. Anyone come across the numbers yet?

I'm quite interested too - I think Universal is overestimating this film - yesterday's 10:30am screening was rather sparse.

I'm curious as well. I just typed "King Kong box office" in Google to see if there were any news stories about it. The only one I saw was an article from The Australian. Seems Kong made $1.1 Million in Australia on opening night (on 465 screens).

I wonder if Kong will perform like Shrek 2, which also opened kinda low on a Wednesday and then exploded on the weekend. If not, then where are the crowds?

I imagine the 3-hour runtime shunned some away from a weeknight showing.

I kind of worry that insanely high expectations have been set for Kong, and even if it does quite well it will be seen as underperforming. The 3-hour runtime will certainly keep it in check.

My thoughts exactly. I would have gone last night but decided to wait until Friday evening.

Heading up to the Twin Cities to see it at Southdale. Love that theatre!

Entirely different set of circumstances, but I don't think the three hour runtime is anymore an excuse for Kong than it was for Titanic, Gone with the Wind, or The Ten Commandments. It seems that quite a few of the all-time top money makers were in excess of 3 hours. I do agree, though, that there have been some seriously high expectations set for Kong. Though, I'm as guilty as anybody in this respect.

I also agree that the three hours will explain off low week-night numbers...I just don't think it's an excuse if the entire box office total for the film is lower than expected.

The over-emphasis that the movie "Might beat Titanic!" will make anything seem disappointing. If it makes $200m, disappointing, $300m, disappointing, $400m, good but not as good as expected? I mean c'mon. Leo's been replaced with his ego personified, it just isn't the same.

$10m opening day is kind of weak though, but aside from internet talk, I haven't heard much hype for the movie. I can't wait to see it this weekend though.

So what'll be the 5 day take be? $120 million?

I think with $10 million on Wednesday, it will be tough to reach $100 for the first 5 days. War of the Worlds had the lowest of the 3 films to achieve this (Star Wars, Harry Potter), and it made $21 million on Wednesday. BUT...that was during the middle of Summer.

I'm gonna guess and say in the $75 to $80 million range. It could be more if it truly goes wild this weekend. But this is a film that isn't going to drop 60% next weekend. I think it will have short, steady drops which will carry it to well over $200 million domestically. That is my hope anyways.

Universal is using the Fellowship of the Ring as a guide to this movie's success. It earned $75 million through 5 and went on to gross over $300 million here in addition to the many Oscar nominations. The same could be said for Kong.

well gathering from the lacklustre attendence at yesterday's morning 10:30am screening I was at - I think Universal is overestimating this.

aren't most people working or in school at 10:30 am? I wouldn't think the attendance would be high for such an early showing.

for the Lord of the Rings films which I saw all on opening day at the same theatre (and in the morning) there were alot of people playing hookie from work/school for those films, not so for 'King Kong'

Exactly. A perfect example of people simply expecting too much from this movie. 10:30am on a Wednesday, and the fact that the theater isn't sold out is taken as a bad sign.

Some how, my finals didn't fall on the same week as LOTR for those 3 years. Weird.

yeah, this tends to be finals week for a lot, it's a week or so before christmas, so people can't really venture out to take the day off before any christmas break.

For the three hour time frame, it's not something you can simply jump into and it doesn't have any cliff hanger lead into it like ROTK did. So it's one people will go watch on the weekend instead.

The weather really was shit this week too for much of the country. I was planning on seeing it last night but it was snowing like a motherfucker and the trains were all delayed so I just went home. During the summer I would have been there.

My god Drudge is slamming this movie big time with accusations of racism and declaring it a bomb already. We can't even give movies their opening weekend anymore before deciding whether it's a hit or a failure.
