-JP I think Superman Returns should be considered a sequel. It's got Marlon Brando and John Williams' music, takes place after Superman I and II, and imdb even claims that it's a continuation of the previous Superman series in the "movie connections" link. I think it's got as much connection to its origins as a new James Bond fiilm has to its predecessors. |

How is something called Superman Returns not considered a sequel?
|
Simple...it has a different director, different actors, different writers, and most importantly, is features a story that both ignores and contradicts already existing sequels. Beyond all of that, this is a quote from an interview with Superman Returns editor and composer John Ottman:
The film is not a sequel or a prequel. It is a new film. So the bulk of the score will also be a new score with new themes, but in the style one would expect in SUPERMAN. Part of what hurt the last couple SUPERMAN movies - and they were sequels - was that the Williams music was just regurgitated, with very little new music to let the saga evolve". -JP |

-JP I still don't buy that. It's got Marlon Brando playing Jor-El again for goodness sake. I can understand Batman Begins having no relation to the previous films, but how do you explain that an actor reprising his role in a subsequent film not a sequel? I take it that Superman defeated Lex Luthor in Superman I and II, went away, and is returning again in Superman Returns. |
Alright, and you can take it that way all you like. As for me...I'll choose to agree with the film's editor and composer when he says that it's not a prequel or a sequel, but a new film.

Not really. It's a remake that bears the same name. More in line with the Ian Fleming novel.
Actually, it's really a "prequel" than a sequel. |
