Three effects of the Kongs
Some guy made a cool montage of all three Kongs and the three eras of their effects: stop-motion, animatronic/make-up, and CGI.
http://www.geocities.com/erik_way/mo...mages/kong.jpg 1933 Kong looks menacing in a raw creepy way (color added is ok for for the picture for comparing, however the movie for me is b&w forever) , the 2005 looks good too like an actual gorilla. The 1976 version looks awful though, it does not have the gorilla proportions, more like bigfoot, kong vs. godzilla flicks. |
That's really cool. I like how he's become more realistic in the '05 version.
|
The '76 Kong looks really dumb when placed along the other two. I don't know what they were thinking by making him walk upright the whole time; even the '33 version had hints that walked on all fours at times. The '05 definitely looks more like an authentic gorilla.
|
the 1976 version looks the scarest I think, probably cause when I was a kid I thought he was scary looking.
|
Forget Kong. Where's a side-by-side montage of the ladies?:eyebrow:
|
In those pictures, I don't think the 76 Kong looks that bad.
|
He doesn't look too bad in still photos and closeups, but when you watch that movie and he's walking around it's obviously a guy in a suit.
|
I thought the 1976 version rocked! And there was a good supporting role done by a young(ish) Rene Auberjonois who is barely recognisable out of his famous Odo make up.
|
FWIW, I think the 1976 version is great for the first act, until after Kong is finally revealed. After he carries Jessica Lange into the forest, the movie does a major backslide. However, the buildup to his appearance is quite riveting, mostly thanks to John Barry's exceptional score.

Ewww, colorized 1933 Kong.

I still like Kong's facial '76 look. The most multi-dimensional face of those comparisons (imo) but of course, I'll just have to see the new movie to fully decide. |
"Three Effects of the Kongs" sounds like a good movie title. It would be something like Pulp Fiction where you have three interweaving stories about how people's lives were affected by the time a group of Kongs came to town.
|
I wonder if the 76 Kong was designed to look "More Human"? When I look at him I get a "Planet of the Apes" feel. Anyway,Toho did that to Godzilla back in the 70s to appeal to kids. -ohbfrank-

Here's where I get shot:
I've never seen the '33 Kong. I have seen the 1976 remake. In the top frame DeLaurentiKong looks terrible. |

No, wait, that other word. Tedious. |
One of the funniest, cringe-inducing scenes in all of film history is in the '76 KK when Kong picks Jessica Lange out of the lake and then blows her dry.
|
Aren't we forgetting a Kong movie here?

There's a ton of other Kong sequels and spin-offs. This is just a discussion of the remakes.

I actually love that flick, because Kong is about 100x bigger than he is in any other movie.
